– A cruel method eerily similar to union-busting by chaebol conglomerates
– An inhumane industry structure that treats artists as disposable commodities
– The true face of entertainment capital mired in greed and stock manipulation allegations
– The need for social attention to restore a just and ethical ecosystem

NewJeans, the girl group debuted in 2022 by HYBE through its subsidiary label ADOR, achieved enormous success not only in Korea but worldwide. Yet in 2024, HYBE launched an audit and a full-scale offensive, claiming that Min Hee-jin had attempted to seize management control. In the process, NewJeans, who sided with Min Hee-jin, were turned into “hostages of a management dispute,” ultimately forced to suspend their activities. This episode starkly illustrates how creative freedom can be suppressed by the logic of capital.

Having lost trust in HYBE, NewJeans attempted to terminate their contracts, but they were unable to overcome the wall of HYBE’s immense capital power and the backing of major law firms. Independent activities were blocked, and eventually NewJeans were compelled to choose a return to HYBE. Yet instead of welcoming them back, HYBE moved toward overt division and disciplining.

In particular, as HYBE’s accusations against Min Hee-jin, such as management takeover attempts and breach of trust, failed to gain traction, the company began exploiting NewJeans’ unfair, near-“slave” contracts to single out and push out just one member, Danielle. Those who had long defended Bang Si-hyuk and HYBE by saying “investment and contracts work this way” now need to confront what they were effectively condoning by remaining silent in the face of such corporate violence.

When NewJeans expressed dissatisfaction with a company that obstructed rather than supported their activities and sought contract termination, HYBE flatly refused and invoked the judiciary to block them. But once the members were forced to accept the company’s will and return, HYBE selectively targeted and attempted to cut off only the member deemed the most defiant through contract termination.

The claim that “everything is ready to support NewJeans’ activities” was false. First, HYBE split Min Hee-jin from NewJeans; then NewJeans from other idol groups; then fandoms from one another; then parents from their children; and now Danielle is being split from the remaining members and their fans. There is even talk of imposing astronomical penalties of hundreds of billions of won on Danielle, effectively seizing all her lifetime earnings.

By brutally crushing the member who most visibly resisted, HYBE appears intent on making an example of her in order to force submission and obedience from the remaining members. This method of repression resembles not only historical witch hunts, but also the tactics chaebol conglomerates have long used to suppress labor unions, isolating and eliminating perceived ringleaders once resistance grows.

It follows a familiar pattern: select a key figure, conduct a witch hunt, divide them from others, and ultimately carry out targeted dismissal and devastating damages claims that destroy lives, often with the help of media and the judiciary. HYBE, with assets exceeding 5 trillion won, already surpasses many traditional conglomerates as a transnational cultural capital giant.

As a cutting-edge platform-capitalist enterprise, HYBE’s behavior closely resembles that of another transnational super-corporation, Coupang. The difference is that HYBE does not trade in logistics and delivery, but in emotions and public sentiment, turning even dreams and hopes into commodities within the idol industry.

Those who generate immense value in this industry... creators, producers, and consumers, are overwhelmingly young people, particularly young women. Today’s K-pop fandoms actively produce passion and emotion through consumption itself. Meanwhile, the executives who monopolize the profits are often middle-aged men “drinking whiskey, playing golf, and driving luxury cars.” This was precisely what Min Hee-jin criticized at her press conference last year.

To be fair, some entertainment executives were once idol trainees or creators themselves, having experienced the industry’s harsh realities firsthand. Yet now, having climbed to the top of giant corporations, they move according to cold commercial calculations, squeezing former peers and younger artists alike.

Whatever her flaws, Min Hee-jin acted as an internal whistleblower. In response, HYBE flooded the media with tens of billions of won in advertising over two years, generating thousands of articles designed to foster hostility and negative public opinion toward her. Sports and entertainment media were particularly active, aided by notorious YouTubers such as Lee Jin-ho, known as the “vice king of entertainment reporting.”

Unable to tolerate the humiliation they felt at Min Hee-jin’s hands, patriarchal and authoritarian executives and investors in the entertainment industry appear eager to retaliate by converting the love and trust created through mutual exchange among artists, creators, and fandoms, “productive consumers”, into mere commodities and numerical rankings.

They seem to believe that aspiring idols are endlessly replaceable, lining up by the truckload, and that idols who grow self-aware and “disobedient” can simply be replaced by virtual idols like HUNTRIX from K-pop Demon Hunters. Capitalist contradictions are maximized here: all human values are commodified and discarded once used.

Those who create value become subordinated by contract to those who invest capital. Artists are alienated from their own labor, creativity, and outcomes. “Dead labor” (capital) dominates “living labor” (creative artistic activity). This is what we have witnessed over the past year in the HYBE affair.

NewJeans member Hanni stated in an interview with TIME last year that “a structural problem of K-pop is that companies don’t see artists as human beings, but as products.” This mindset is now eroding the very core... love, trust, passion, and emotional connection, that enabled K-pop’s astonishing success.

This contradiction stems from capitalism itself: artists succeed by moving the hearts of ordinary people far removed from money and power, yet control over their economic survival ultimately lies with a small group wielding massive capital and investment power.

Pablo Picasso, a great artist and member of the French Communist Party, once said, “Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth.” Behind the glamorous stages and global success of K-pop lie unfair contracts, the exploitation of trainees’ dreams, chart manipulation, public opinion engineering, and monopolistic abuses by major agencies.

Chairman Bang Si-hyuk and HYBE grew into a K-pop behemoth by aggressively employing these methods, accumulating vast wealth and influence. Criticism has been constant regarding creative homogenization for profit maximization, factory-style idol commodification, excessive merchandising, and exploitative fan marketing.

Most shocking are the allegations of stock manipulation. Bang Si-hyuk is accused of deceiving investors by promising not to go public, then inducing them to sell shares to a private equity fund he established, reaping approximately 400 billion won in IPO profits. Authorities are reportedly investigating him for fraudulent trading and market manipulation.

Ultimately, the forces that restructured K-pop around capital and managerial efficiency, damaging the creative ecosystem, are now accused of stock manipulation, and may even dismantle NewJeans, once hailed as a symbol of K-pop’s future. Where are the Lee Jae-myung administration and the Ministry of Culture, which promised to support K-pop as a national cultural asset?

If we are to eradicate harmful industry practices and build a just ecosystem that respects artistic value, labor contributions, and the voices of fandoms beyond mere consumers, we can no longer stand by. Treating culture and art solely as profit engines while partnering with giant entertainment corporations to chase overseas expansion will not lead to prosperity, it will hasten collapse.
