We, the Weizmann Institute of Science community, deeply mourn the passing of Prof. Ada Yonath of the Institute’s Chemical and Structural Biology Department. Prof. Yonath pioneered the study of the ribosome, the cell’s protein factory, and was awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her research in this field. Her decades-long scientific journey led to an understanding of how various antibiotics work, helping pave the way for the development of new antibiotics and the fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Yonath, the first Israeli woman scientist to win a Nobel Prize, also received dozens of other awards and honors, including the Israel Prize in Chemistry and the Wolf Prize in Chemistry. Prof. Yonath exemplified how scientific vision, the courage to choose a major scientific question and unwavering dedication to its pursuit can lead to extraordinary achievements and expand the boundaries of knowledge for the future of humanity.

Romi Gonen was r*ped by four different men on separate occasions during her captivity in Gaza, including a “nurse” who was supposed to care for her wounds.

Alon Ohel was sexually abused by his captor while naked and forced to shower.

Guy Gilboa Dalal said his Hamas captor sexually assaulted him after a shower, holding a gun to his head and a knife to his throat.

Amit Soussana described being sexually assaulted by her captor while held hostage. Every day, he would ask when her period would end so he could finally have his way with her.

Dafna Elyakim, 15, said her captor touched her constantly and told her she would stay in Gaza to marry him and have his children.

Rom Braslavski revealed that PIJ terrorists sexually abused and humiliated him. They stripped him naked, tied him up, abused and tortured him.

Aviva Siegel told the UN that she saw a young girl in captivity crying after her captor followed her into the bathroom and forced her to perform oral s*x.

Ilana Gritzewsky woke up on October 7 in Gaza, half-naked, her breasts exposed and her pants pulled down, surrounded by seven terrorists.

Agam Goldstein-Almog testified that she witnessed another hostage being forced at gunpoint to touch, and be touched by her captor.

These are only the stories we know. Hundreds more will never be heard, because most of Hamas's rape victims were murdered.

On October 7, countless bodies were found without underwear, with mutilated genitalia, or with broken pelvises.

Several Nova survivors also testified that they heard terrorists gang-raping women and men during the massacre.

How many more testimonies do you need to believe that Hamas and PIJ used rape as a weapon of war?

I waited for the noise around Zohran Mamdani, the online shouting match that swung between defaming him and glorifying him, to quiet down a little before weighing in.

Mamdani built his brand on grievance: the persecuted Muslim immigrant standing up to the big, bad West. But scratch the surface, and the story falls apart.

To begin with, Mamdani is an Aga Khani Ismaili — a small sect that follows a living Imam and whose interpretations of the Quran most Sunnis and Shias consider heretical. That’s what makes his rise so ironic: a man from a sect rejected by mainstream Islam has become the West’s go-to “Muslim voice,” the self-appointed representative of a faith that doesn’t even recognize him. Though he describes himself as a Twelver.

During his campaign, Mamdani leaned hard on identity politics. Outside a Bronx mosque, he invoked “the memory of my aunt,” who supposedly stopped taking the subway after 9/11 because she feared for her safety in a hijab. Except it wasn’t true.

Records show Mamdani has three aunts, two Hindu, and one Muslim who lived in Tanzania between 2000 and 2003. She never wore a hijab and wasn’t in New York before, during, or after 9/11.

There’s a clear pattern: Mamdani weaponizes the language of oppression, Islamophobia, colonialism, white supremacy, to build power, then turns it into a tool of moral absolutism once he’s there.

Ironically, he also pulled 32% of New York’s Jewish vote (compared to Republican Curtis Sliwa’s 5%). The real danger isn’t his faith or even accusations of antisemitism, it’s his ideology. A socialist revolutionary in activist clothing, a far-left ideologue wrapped in the myth of persecution.

Mamdani’s rhetoric carries echoes of old Ba’athist language, that intoxicating blend of nationalism, socialism, and moral authoritarianism that once ruled the Arab world. If the Ba’athists were still around, they’d be applauding. Saddam would be smiling in hell.

Nearly 8% of Holocaust survivors committed suicide after WW2.

In the years immediately following liberation, survivors were discouraged from speaking about the horrors they endured. Those who tried were often met with disbelief, discomfort, or indifference.

They carried an unspeakable trauma into a world that continued to turn their back on their suffering. Few were offered the resources to process atrocities so inhumane they defied human imagination.

Today, we’re watching the same tragedy unfold with survivors of October 7.

While Oct 7 survivors struggle with the most barbaric slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust, antisemites march in the streets for their rapists and murderers.

History isn’t just being forgotten. It’s being repeated — and celebrated.

It’s October 7th.

Two years ago, I would’ve described myself as progressive. That day showed me I was standing on the side of people that are truly evil.

I really held two contradictory views from being in the movement. I’ve heard all these things about Israel abusing the Palestinians and I believed them. I also had seen antisemitism growing up in Mississippi and felt very strongly it was something decent people should fight.

And so I did what almost no other progressive did in the aftermath of October 7th. I took time to really read and study the conflict before voicing opinions on it. And it turned out everything the progressive movement has been claiming the Israelis were doing was just frankly a lie. Six wars and six major conflicts since 1948, and Jews had started none of it. The constant barrage of rocket attacks on civilians truly shocked my conscience, something none of my friends seemed to care about.

In the two years since that horrific day and progressives have been crystal clear. Jews don’t count. And since I decided to stand with them, they’ve made it clear that I don’t count either.

It has been like setting my career and friendships on fire. I regret literally nothing because that inch of integrity is all we have in this world. But I do regret standing for so long with a movement fundamentally, incapable from telling good from evil.
