"As part of President Donald Trump's budget plan, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS) will see its funding cut from around $125 million a year to about $25 million." -Newsweek
If you know how much Chicago (or any other university) is paying to give everyone on campus Claude Enterprise, my DMs are open. I am curious how this expense compares to the apparently “too expensive” humanities PhD programs Chicago has cut. I bet the answer is illuminating!
2020: “You need to stop using plastic straws. Climate change is the greatest threat to humanity.”
2026: “Anyway, here’s a 62-square-mile AI data center"
@CareyBrian@dee_of_e There are ways to prove the student didn’t write it (even if you can’t prove AI did), and that’s enough to move forward in a formal allegation (or to have serious talk w/ student and find an alternate way to handle it). It won’t work for all cases, but nothing ever does.
@_me_you_coward@RezekJoe Yeah, if only. Cause they keep hauling the books out of our uni library in favor of study space and group space and etc. amid budget declines.

still not quite over the fact that i watched 15 year olds get sued for millions of dollars for downloading twelve songs and now we all have to accept AI slop because every tech company in the known universe decided that IP laws don't exist now that they're inconvenient for them
Texas A&M is continuing its purge of the WGST program. Faculty have now been notified that two additional courses have been canceled for the fall semester after exceptions were denied.
The pattern is becoming increasingly clear: the systematic dismantling of Women’s and Gender Studies is underway.
@DellAnnaLuca@HottyCouture WTF is wrong with these people or these fields that there’s a sense that the author hasn’t/authors haven’t actually read cited articles and books?!?!? Why are you referencing things you haven’t read regularly enough for this to be a problem??
Still think we’re understating the impact of AI on university degrees. A growing numbers of students don’t just lack the inclination to read but the *capacity*. Literally unable to read and absorb difficult sentences for an extended period. Same goes for writing.
A modest proposal: If you submit a manuscript with a made-up citation—not a bungled or misspelled reference—you receive a 5-year ban on having your work reviewed at that journal.
It was clear for thousands of years that the cultivation of our humanity was the most important project we could undertake. The fact that the value of this is no longer legible to us--that we see no "point" to education beyond earning a wage--is the real crisis.
