🏗️ What OpenChirp Is
OpenChirp is an open-source IoT management framework that sits above LoRaWAN. It's not itself the radio protocol — it's the context, storage, visualization, and access-control layer that makes a LoRaWAN deployment actually usable.

📡 The Interesting Part: LPRAN
This is the piece worth dwelling on, because it's where the project goes beyond "another LoRa dashboard."
LPRAN is a software-defined radio (SDR) hardware platform that can pull signals out from -30 dB below the noise floor. That's not a marketing number — that's a genuinely hard DSP problem, and it's the kind of thing you'd find in military-grade or deep-space communication, not hobbyist IoT.
What it unlocks:
•Raw I/Q streams in the cloud — instead of each gateway decoding locally, you ship the raw complex samples up and process them centrally.
•Collaborative multi-gateway decoding — multiple gateways receiving the same weak signal can jointly decode it, which is how you extract data from below the noise floor (signal averaging across spatially diverse receivers).
•Localization — with multiple gateways and raw I/Q, you can do time-difference-of-arrival (TDoA) localization, which is dramatically more precise than RSSI-based ranging.
This is the "community-driven LP-WAN" paper's real contribution: treating a network of cheap SDR gateways as a distributed phased array, not a collection of independent packet radios.

📶 LoRaWAN 101 (the context)
LoRaWAN is built for battery devices sending a few bytes over long range:
•1–2 km in urban areas
•Up to 15 km in open space
•Payloads measured in bytes, not kilobytes
•Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS) modulation — the "chirp" in ChirpStack/OpenChirp
The chirp spread spectrum paper you cited is the modulation layer: LoRa encodes data in the frequency sweep of a chirp, which gives it two superpowers:
