Elon Musk is considering bringing Tesla and SpaceX together, and the two companies are now taking formal steps to explore a potential merger.

Musk says combining the companies would be "a good idea," revealing that both have formed special committees of independent directors to evaluate a deal.

SpaceX shares jumped as much as 8% in extended trading following his comments, but Musk cautions that a merger is far from guaranteed.

The billionaire sees major opportunities in combining the companies' work on artificial intelligence, robotics and advanced technology.
