@reroutethe23 @texcapprezjimmy @justinsoltesz @loubar76 @lourdesforcbus@ColumbusDPS@MayorGinther@SG_Hardin Corridors don’t tend to be evaluated holistically. There are lots of legacy codes and manuals impacting what can be done, what is decided, and when changes take place… resulting in a disjointed process 2/2
@reroutethe23 @texcapprezjimmy @justinsoltesz @loubar76 @lourdesforcbus@ColumbusDPS@MayorGinther@SG_Hardin It’s far from perfect but much better and slower than it was before the street was redone… I wonder how the process to study signal removals can be fixed to take more nuance into consideration. Having worked in the field for a long time 1/2
@reroutethe23 @justinsoltesz @loubar76 @lourdesforcbus@ColumbusDPS@MayorGinther@SG_Hardin Sometimes a redesign of the street with a road diet or other design features can help change driver behavior to encourage lower speeds, then new speed data is collected in an effort to reduce the posted speed legally
@reroutethe23 @justinsoltesz @loubar76 @lourdesforcbus@ColumbusDPS@MayorGinther@SG_Hardin There is a provision of the Columbus city codes that allows 25 in a business district for arterial streets. Outside of that, the City submits documentation of a speed study to try to justify a lower posted speed to ODOT… or used to be the case.
@reroutethe23 It creates a unsafe conflict point for sure and honestly… fighting about 30 parking spaces where there is not scarcity worries me for all future infrastructure projects - including BRT
@reroutethe23 @ColumbusCouncil @MayorGinther Fair! Thanks for writing a letter. 🥳 I feel when the mobility network is in question the shared ROW should serve all of us, not defer to the immediate neighbors. Decisions should be based on policy objectives, data, and safety - not perceived parking concerns! 🔥
@mrsgeedeck Could it be better with a bigger scope and budget? Of course. But given the scope, this would be a safety improvement and could be enhanced over time with improved sidewalks, protected lanes, enhanced crossings, etc.
@mrsgeedeck Right! It’s not a suburban Target. One of the reasons this strip is a draw is the urbanish neighborhood vibe. I also believe the overall transportation network should be a public asset, meeting users needs safely while balancing parking needs. Which the proposed plan does imo…
@bikelanecbus @WalkerEvans@mrsgeedeck Agree. And I love having access to these businesses. I want them to stay. I believe the proposed change will benefit everyone, especially given the safety benefits overall, relative availability of parking (I live here, walk, bike, bus, and drive).
@MobileHarv I would also argue there are safety reasons to make the proposed change - regardless of bikes (though it’s the right thing to do to connect existing lanes). Especially given vision zero, crossing safety complaints, and speeding….
