@jkirk___ Yes! I am not a superhero; I'm a highly educated professional. I adore working with kids, and I am a person outside of and apart from my job with a family who I will do anything to keep safe. Saying those things doesn't make someone a less dedicated or effective teacher.

@heymrsbond A student wrote on their year-end, anonymous survey about my class: "This class feels like a home." It's better than anything on a Danielson rubric and something I carry on hard days. This work is vital, and it's a privilege to teach middle school ELA.

@clhubes And full time preschool! So many in our area are $2,500+ a month for full time or, like, $1,000/month for 3 day a week 9 AM - 1 PM 😭

@heymrsbond Many of my clearest, fondest memories of elementary school are "fun" days with my 1st grade teacher. She made a fake bonfire from craft paper in the middle of the classroom and we went "camping," she knitted each of us a scarf for Christmas, and she made me love reading.

@cadlymack Yep. I teach adolescent boys, and often they repeat things they see/hear online or from their families. 5 or 6 years ago, a 12 year old told a girl "shut up or I'll r-- you," and then couldn't tell me what that meant but that he'd seen it online. It's awful.

@EAwaah Same. I keep thinking of my students and their families who were deported in 2107. The day after in 2106, kids were so scared. I felt powerless to do anything but hold space for them and love them.

@thinkiamsad 6th grade teacher here. I figured out none of my students knew phonics when years ago I told them "just sound it out if you're not sure!" and they looked at me like I had two heads. It's really sad to see functionally illiterate kids get pushed along.

@sage_stage A colleague is trying a work refusal form with her 7th graders whenever they opt not to do work in class. They fill out a half sheet with their name, date, and why they're choosing not to/what they're using the time for instead.

@heymrsbond Amazing! I taught IB Lit to classes of 34 😭 I could not give feedback to their writing without working hours and hours on the weekends.

We used to joke that the district's philosophy was, "pack 'em deep; teach 'em cheap" 🙄

@HeatherL114 We toured a home daycare/preschool in Seattle that straight up used kindergarten curriculum of their neighborhood school. It was a good environment, very rigorous, but we chose a different place that has more unstructured play time 🤷🏼‍♀️
