Lindsay admitted causing unnecessary suffering to a two-year-old dog called Zimba by failing to provide effective flea control and failing to investigate and address the causes of her poor bodily condition and weight loss. The RSPCA were contacted by a local authority enforcement officer after the discovery of Zimba’s emaciated body in March 2024. This had been partially wrapped in a black refuse bin liner and placed in a communal bin.
Post-mortem examination found Zimba was in an emaciated body condition evidenced by diffuse skeletal muscle wastage, lack of fat tissue and serious atrophy of the bone marrow. She was dehydrated at the time of death. The dog weighed 17.4kg and the post mortem showed she had eaten non-nutritive substances (grey material and rubber) in her desperation for food. In mitigation Lindsay said he did not know who could help him care for the dog. Sentencing | 26 weeks in prison, suspended for two years; 200 hours of unpaid work; 20 days of ‘rehabilitation’; costs of £500 and £154 victim surcharge; FIVE-year ban applicable to all animals.
