We've been quiet recently because Mark Goodwin and I have been working to write the most comprehensive investigation into Polymarket's origins and ambitions to date.

We found that Polymarket's "official" origin story, that Shayne Coplan founded the company alone in 2020 and then built "the company in his bathroom", is a lie. Polymarket really started years earlier as another company called TokenBnk that was deeply tied to Israeli interests, specifically a crypto company founded by Benjamin Netanyahu's niece and nephew. Coplan has actively tried to obfuscate this company from his story and it's not the only thing either.

In Part 1 of this two-part series, we unravel the real history of Polymarket, directly connecting the company to Peter Thiel's efforts to resurrect controversial DARPA programs from its now defunct Information Awareness Office. Polymarket appears to have been chosen by Thiel and his associates to succeed in resurrecting DARPA's Policy Analysis Market where another Thiel-linked company, Augur, had previously failed.

You have to continue pruning the tree when you’re a starting a biz, bring people on, see how resourceful they are, then cut the branches when they start going overboard.

You see all these people who don’t own their own company at fancy foods and it’s like, you don’t know what it takes to build that and you’re just wasting and wasting resources. Some people just know how to waste and consume without having any repercussions except maybe getting fired from the business. You don’t respect it if you’re just burning cash for no reason. Good employees and resourceful employees and Swiss knife employees are extremely hard to find it seems.

I think a lot of people confuse conferences with sales. They think it’s a shortcut to sales right away and making a quick buck. That couldn’t be further from the truth, honestly, because you see so many people come and go when it comes to various industries, food industry, imagine trying to sell to people when you’ve never even spent time in NYC specifically. You see so many transient people who come and go. It’s more of a filter, especially if they don’t live in the city. It’s become less of a transaction and more of a club to the point where it feels like not capitalism, it feels more like how you do business in Greece which is all relationship based.

A lot of people in the food industry are not very good sales people. There’s a very tiny slice that is very good at sales and then everyone else is just meh.
