Listen 🔊 to one of Flaco's hooting sessions in Central Park's North Woods. We always found his hoots reassuring, a way for him to make his presence and vitality known—and in recent months the only way to find him at night. Hoot on, Flaco! 🦉 ❤️
Flaco spent his first 13 years primarily living for the benefit of people. As much as his story of survival and adaptation touched all of us, he was finally able to live for his own benefit in the past year.

10 months after fleeing a Central Park zoo, Flaco is demonstrating his Eurasian Eagle-Owl resilience & appears set to mark his first (white?) Christmas as a free bird. His warrior-like pose @ New York Central Park. (2023-03-21) #BBCWildlifePOTD#ThePhotoHour#IndiAves#birdcpp
Today marks the 10th month of freedom for Flaco the Eurasian eagle-owl. He’s been full of surprises from the start. The first time I saw him on a building was weeks after his escape, when he flew to Central Park’s Naumburg Bandshell. Now he can’t get enough of buildings!

Happy Thanksgiving!
I have a lot for which I’m thankful this year. Here on social media, I’m thankful for a lovely and encouraging community.
As you may know, I photograph many subjects but have a soft spot for urban owls. These are my most cherished urban owl experiences:

@davidlei Hi David - though I pretty much had given up on Twitter for lent, I just had to let you know how gorgeous your photos of Flaco are ... your comments & perspective are always so respectful. Thank you!
I took this photo in the dark but the subject was radiant as ever.

Flaco, the Central Park Eurasian eagle-owl, tearing into a rat the other night. He glances around between bites—typical behavior for an owl on the ground with food to watch for approaching competitors / predators. Something delightful in the last 10 seconds…
