Most marketing distribution: “Here’s the highest-level summary of our thing, go check it out.”
Better marketing distribution: “Here’s a specific insight from a thing we did. What do you think? Also there’s lots more where that came from.”
My dad had to have an emergency procedure yesterday.
He was by himself in LA.
He was scared and none of us knew what the right call was (do the procedure or wait and explore less invasive solutions?).
Then, the doctor got on a zoom call with our entire family (me in SF, mom in TX, @nikil in NYC) and patiently answered ALL our questions in detail for over an hour.
Because of what she taught us & how she answered our questions, we decided to move forward with the procedure.
They got started on him around 4:30PM.
Then they went radio silent.
We didn’t hear anything for hours. (Procedure should have taken an hour or so)
At 9:30 my mom, brother, and I started getting really worried.
Finally, my dad called us back.
Turns out the procedure took longer than expected. And now he and the doctor ordered Indian food and were eating dinner together at the clinic. 😂
The doctor called me, “The restaurant your dad wanted was going to close, so I had him order it to the clinic. Now we’re just chatting and eating Indian food.”
I just started laughing. 😂 (This is so classic of my Dad. He just went to Cancun for the first time and found the “best Indian restaurant” ever.)
My takeaway: So much of healthcare is not about the actual procedure. It’s about how we feel when we’re talking to the doctor, it’s how we’re taken care of, it’s feeling like someone has our best interests at heart and is going to make good decisions about our health.
It’s answering questions patiently. It’s treating us like we’re intelligent and capable of understanding what’s happening. It’s eating dinner with us at 9:30PM bc we’re by ourselves in a new city. It’s feeling safe.
Moments like these are so rare. And for good reason — it’s not realistic that a doctor can spend an hour on every patient, explaining what will happen. It’s not realistic that we end up eating Indian food together after a procedure.
But what if we can get just a little bit closer?
I’m bullish on the human side of medicine. 💙
Private health insurance on average pays hospitals 2.5 times what Medicare does for the same services, with some states seeing relative prices of more than 3 times greater, according to a new report. https://t.co/alFumYdZZW
I used Summer Health this morning for my kids’ pink eye and I reached a pediatric nurse in 2 minutes via SMS. I’ve heard a lot of physicians say that in-person is ideal because the importance of the physical exam, the subtleties etc.
My take: We too often rank virtual care against the most ideal in-person experience and say it falls short. But how about stacking it against the more realistic alternatives: No care at all b/c people have jobs, or a 5-minute in person visit after an hour in a waiting room surrounded by other sick kids.
the older i get, the more i'm convinced the single most important trait that matters in your friends, coworkers, life partner, and kids - is high agency.
@Taskrabbit it’s BS that you can’t leave a public review for a tasker that cancels on you last minute. There’s no impact to their public profile when there’s bad behavior, which erodes trust in your platform.
@taskrabbit_help@Taskrabbit I’ve been a promoter of the @Taskrabbit platform to friends and family over the years, as I appreciated there to be reviews for services where there hasn’t previously — but the fact that bad behavior can go on without impact to a taskers reviews undermines trust in your platform
@taskrabbit_help What’s most frustrating is that the @Taskrabbit platform does not allow me to leave a review. So this tasker is going to continue to viewed as someone with “5 stars”. This certainly makes me wonder about all the other well rated taskers on the platform
Uff. This is a gut punch.

For all the “advice” about diversifying deposits, please think it through. A $10M Series A would require FORTY different banks to get full FDIC coverage.
And sure say MM or Treasury. But teams of 15 don’t have bandwidth to manage complex financial products. That is not the job.
The best performers are not consistently great but they're great at being consistent.
They show up day in, day out and put in the work.
They make progress by applying the right amount of stress followed by the right amount of rest.
They repeat this pattern over and over again.
@maiab We were nervous that she just named a higher price to win us as clients but when we looked at her prev listings and checked references, she never seemed to have to reduce price later. She ended up getting it sold above ask. Well worth looking for a strong broker
@maiab The broker that was more aggressive just knew the market and potential buyer set much better, and had built up a strong email list to market to.
