Here are a few thoughts keeping me grounded as an #ELL#EAL teacher during online teaching/learning. This is my reflection (therapy journal?) after 5 weeks online. @TanELLclassroom @AndreaHonigsfel@nordmeyerj @susanguderyon @Larryferlazzo
The absence of inclusive language policies in learning spaces means we are either being intentionally exclusive or unintentionally neglectful. Both are unacceptable. It’s time to ensure all languages have a place in all schools so that all learners feel seen & valued.
When students dysregulate and behave in unexpected ways, they are thinking with the emotional part of their brain at that moment. This is not a teachable moment. It is a time to connect, not correct. #LeadInclusion#EdChat#UDL#Inclusion#SEL
"I wish I could go back and tell my first-year teacher self: This work you are embarking on is a marathon without end. There is no 'done.' There is no finite marker of success," offers @AvashiaNeema. #EWOpinion https://t.co/Y8auyiJBQ2

I find it interesting when people say this without finding the contradiction:
"We're an international school. Parents send their children here to learn English."
INTERNATIONAL cannot mean ENGLISH-only
"We express our identity and make sense of our world through language. Languages can define us as both individuals and communities. An undeniable aspect of being human, language can both connect us or divide us." - @nordmeyerj in the #WIDAGlobal Newsletter

A strong reminder that we still have a lot of work to do as we unpack the complexities of international schools. Only one piece of the puzzle is moving towards more equitable and inclusive language policies.

“… there is absolutely no evidence of any academic benefit from assigning homework in elementary or middle school … At the high school level, the correlation is weak and tends to disappear when more sophisticated statistical measures are applied."

Another publication - this time with my amazing WIDA colleague, Jon Nordmeyer @nordmeyerj!
We really enjoyed the opportunity to engage with a theoretical concept, glocality, and ask how it informs our work with international schools. We'd love to hear your thoughts!
Grateful for this article co-authored with

Hi, lovely elementary school colleagues! @teacher2teacher
I'm crowdsourcing examples of differentiation in elementary school for a future presentation.
Can you share photos of how you differentiate for MLs in the elementary school?
In this episode, I share what I wished I had learned about being a specialist from when I first started. This advice would have saved me so much grief! https://t.co/eVAtGYDi3q
