While I didn’t get the GI Joe aircraft carrier that 🎄Christmas, I 𝘥𝘪𝘥 receive it a few weeks later, in a hospital bed, after contracting pneumonia and nearly losing my life.

That wasn’t an isolated event.

I was born nearly three months premature, with underdeveloped lungs and severe childhood asthma. For the first 16 years of my life, I was hospitalized with pneumonia almost every year. Nebulizers, rescue inhalers, steroids, they were all part of daily life.

At the time, I didn’t understand it. I was just a kid who couldn’t breathe.

Years later, that experience became something else entirely: 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. 💪

It played a direct role in my pursuit of regenerative medicine and, ultimately, in the development of a 𝐧𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐭-𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐦𝐚 (𝐏𝐑𝐏) protocol for 𝘨𝘭𝘶𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘪𝘥-𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘩𝘮𝘢, a condition that shaped my childhood and limited my life for years.

This time of year is always a reminder for me.

We gather with friends and family. We reflect on what we 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 and what we 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘥. And if we’re honest, we realize that the greatest gift was never the toy, or the item, or the thing... It was 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡, and the chance to fight for it!

Without health, very little else truly matters.

As we head into a new year, I’m deeply grateful:
🔹for the science that continues to evolve
🔹for the physicians willing to think differently
🔹and for the patients who remind us 𝘸𝘩𝘺 this work matters!

@kirawontmiss Had really bad food poisoning 🤢 🤮 got dehydrated. Had to go to HCA urgent care in Orlando, FL for IV. Have BCBS insurance. Out of pocket was almost $5,000 for a bag of fluids, a Tylenol, and a mini-Gatorade bottle. Total BS!!! 🐄 💩
