Should YOU do Programming Languages research in era of LLMs? Many would say NO. But I say YES!
PL Research is dead? Nay! the era of PL Exploration is just beginning.
Fuck the users. Fuck the applications. Let's do some fucking PL research!

@kirancodes highly agree with this take! also, this should herald in a new age of highly specialised dsls, which also restrict what llms can and cannot do, making things ever so predictable but flexible
I’m sure Deepmind had good intentions with SynthID. But adding a random 12-mer to a protein intentionally optimized for a specific property in almost every case will be a problem. For example, a therapeutic mAb optimized to mitigate immunogenicity - if I watermark it, it now risks reduced solubility, immunogenicity, and off-target interactions that may be more harmful to a patient than the initial design released by authors who published their paper open access with open-sourced code. Blindly applying strategies that are effective in software dev/cybersecurity don’t work with biology. Your IPO/stock price will still be successful if you acknowledge this.
the fascist state thinks, just because they flash some lights and do a eeeooo sound, everyone has to "get out of their way". don't let them get away with it
@PhilipPanass On that note, I am curious if you have come across Sharjeel Imam's writings on Muslims in India (and Pakistan) and what you think of them
There's a range of human activity that falls in the
"you should not behave this way and people should criticize you and think less of you if you do but it also wouldn't make sense to make it illegal" bucket and I fear we're losing sight of the whole concept of honor and ethics.
I am seeing a recent trend in social media of trying to make a superhero of Srinivasa Ramanujan. While he did have many great mathematical ideas, this attempt to deify him seems suspiciously like a concerted effort these days. He was hardly in the category of Newton, Gauss, Fourier, etc.
Do you see Indian scientists like JC Bose, Amartya Sen, CR Rao or GN Ramachandran, all arguably GOATs in their respective fields, get deified in the same way as Ramanujan?
I think the push to turn Ramanujan into some sort of mythical enigmatic figure is part of the Indian Knowledge Systems gang to push this narrative of a great genius who got his theorems directly from a goddess, because it suits their worldview.
Wrong advice for junior developer: look at the AI generated code, since you need to mature as a programmer. Right advice: save time with AI coding and write by hand "get-better" programs: interpreters, games, ray tracers, ...
Pay no attention to the people Claude has enabled the US military to kill or the cyber attacks that it’s been used. In the in-house evals A\ ran it didn’t do anything wrong. And besides, it’s neither open source nor Chinese. So it can’t really be evil, can it?
(Yes it can)
I came across this post and had to share 😭 Uzbekistan’s volleyball team arrived in Japan unaware of the matching-socks rule. With only hours to avoid a potential forfeit, they rushed to FamilyMart—and somehow found socks in their national colors 🇺🇿 🥺

But Swatantra Bhardwaj deserved the court’s “trust” in being granted bail despite admitting an attempt to murder a Dalit man on camera. If you are a Brahmin man, you can get away with murder in India. If you are a Muslim or Dalit, you are tortured for merely existing.
