How the American family farm was dismantled, decade by decade. No villain, no crime, just a direction nobody ever voted for.

The 1950s. Five million family farms, most of them small, most worked by the family whose name was on the mailbox. A barn, a few dozen cows, a tractor the farmer mended himself on a winter night. The town had a feed store, a diner, a school full of farm kids. The money a farm made mostly stayed in the county. Hard, weather-beaten work, and it belonged to the people doing it.

The 1970s. The message from the top changed. Nixon's Agriculture Secretary, Earl Butz, told farmers to get big or get out, and to plant fencerow to fencerow. Borrow. Expand. Buy out the neighbour. For a few heady years it worked. Land soared, grain flowed to the world, and the man who leveraged himself to the hilt looked like a genius. The whole machine quietly stopped rewarding the careful small operator and started rewarding scale, and the debt it took to get there.

The 1980s. The bill came due. Interest rates climbed toward twenty per cent, exports stalled, and land that had risen for a decade lost half its value almost overnight. The farms that had borrowed to get big, exactly as they were told, could no longer carry the debt. Auctioneers worked the yards of families who had farmed the same ground for a century. Banks foreclosed. Farmer suicides climbed. Hundreds of thousands were driven off the land for good, and the small towns hollowed out behind them, one boarded window at a time.

The 2000s. With the small farms thinned out, consolidation climbed the chain. A handful of meatpackers came to own the cattle, the hogs and the chickens. Growers took on the barns, the debt and the risk while the company owned the animals and set every term. A few giant retailers decided what food was worth. The farmer's slice of each food dollar shrank to a sliver, and the margin at the farm gate all but vanished.

Today. The biggest few per cent of farms hold most of the ground. Wall Street treats farmland as an asset class and rents it back to the people who used to own it. The average American farmer is pushing sixty, and the young man or woman who wants in cannot get a foot in the door, because the land now costs more than a lifetime of farming it could ever repay. The barn still stands. The name on the mailbox keeps changing, and fewer of those names belong to a family at all.

Every step looked reasonable to somebody in an office. Get efficient. Reward the productive. Trust the market. Add them up across seventy years and you have the slow, deliberate clearing of the most independent people the country ever produced.

They called it progress at every step.
