Interesting remarks from Syria's President Sharaa.

It might be a mistranslation of sorts, but he makes it sound as though Kurdish children will be able to continue their education in Kurdish if they so choose. If this is what he means, this has not happened yet. There are currently only a few hours of elective Kurdish-language courses.

If he means there will be a change in the current policy and that Kurds will be able to study primarily in Kurdish (not necessarily all courses), then that would be a very laudable development and would meet a highly important core demand of the Kurdish people in Syria.

In any case, implementing policies that recognize the right to education in Kurdish-- not merely the opportunity to learn Kurdish as an elective-- would set an important precedent and represent a meaningful rupture with the discriminatory traditions of the Syrian state.

SDF commander-in-chief Mazloum Abdi has been appointed as Presidential advisor for Kurdish affairs in Syria, while former Autonomous Administration External Relations co-chair Ahmed has been appointed to the administration of the People's Assembly in Syria, where she is expected to have responsibilities regarding managing the Kurdish issue within the Syrian parliament. The appointments have still not been officially announced by the Syrian Transitional Government.

A-: A Kurdish cultural revival and deep cultural entrenchment among Syrian Kurds, unlike anything seen before in the history of Kurds in Rojava.

B-: A generation of strong Kurdish-speaking youth, while also helping revive Kurdish linguistic skills among older generations whose language had been weakened by decades of Arabization policies imposed by successive Syrian governments.

C-: Nearly a decade and a half of freedom from repression and discrimination based on Kurdish identity, language, and culture.

D-: A generation that grew up knowing what cultural and political freedom feels like, and therefore may be far less willing to surrender those gains.

@RZelal92460 You are right but the American government treats many Kurdish organizations as terrorists (and the Revolutionary Youth are blamed for many attacks), and Trump is looking for ways to do the same to DSA and YDSA. So they would probably see it as too much of a risk, unfortunately.

@Omaradation I certainly don’t interpret his statements that way. To my knowledge he doesn’t view engagement with bourgeois democracy as counter to building a non-state democracy if that engagement counters repression and creates more space for building a democratic culture.
