Other language which can be a candidate of a lingua Franca is Sanskrit. That’s why constitution assembly voted in favor of Hindi over Sanskrit

Smart and educated people are now shifting to English in all sciences. So the Tamil politicians aversion to Hindi is actually bad for Tamil too.

@dhume The reason southern states ( actually it was only one state Tamilnadu) were Ok with English as lingua Franca because elite already knew English because British “imposed” it. Had india not been colonized, even southern states would have proposed Indian language as lingua Franca.
