Lolcow Soup

Not actually a smoking Barney knockoff

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

@SeanTrende Symptom management focused on brain signaling (if it works) concerns me way less than genetic therapy and the other things that used to be pitched by medical researchers.

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

@tony_tweets1 @anotherglassbox Unfair to compare Carville to Kinsella.

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

@anotherglassbox Reluctantly voting for him (like reading your takes even when I disagree) but if he showed up at my doorstep he could easily push me to Chow. Bad campaign.

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

@NickyFrank30 Even after moving Bobo to the other side of the state so she could run in a safer seat? Wild.

[Ihab Hassan @IhabHassane]

Abdul El-Sayed is wrong about part of this story—and so are you, Hen.

There was no general order from the Arab armies or Arab governments telling Palestinians to leave their homes so they could return after an Arab victory. That claim has been examined extensively and is not supported by the historical record.

Even Israeli historian Benny Morris, who has worked extensively with Israeli archival material, describes the idea of a general Arab order to flee as a myth. He notes that Arab leaders, including Fawzi al-Qawuqji and Jordanian authorities, actually issued orders telling Palestinians not to leave, in some cases even threatening sanctions against those who did. Morris has rejected the broader claim, arguing that there was no policy of the Arab states or Palestinian national leadership encouraging or ordering the population to flee.

Yes, there were localized evacuation orders. Some local Palestinian leaders evacuated particular areas, women and children were sometimes removed from combat zones, and Arab armies occasionally ordered specific villages evacuated. Nobody needs to deny that.

But that's completely different from claiming that the Arab states ordered the Palestinian population to leave Palestine and told them they could return after defeating Israel.

As for what drove the mass displacement of Palestinians, Morris has argued that “the main cause of the Arab plight were Zionist attacks on villages and towns, and the fear of such attacks.”

Israel subsequently adopted a policy of preventing the return of Palestinian refugees.

So if we're going to accuse others of “selectively revising history,” we should probably start by not repeating one of the most thoroughly challenged myths about 1948.

@NickyFrank30 AirTrain is closed I guess.

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

@Deathcheat6 No, it's not pro-pedo; no, it did not portray Chris Hansen as nuanced or well-intentioned.

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

@RobbieBarstool The film felt pointless. There's some stuff about Hansen kinda "grooming" one of the decoys but there isn't really any direction beyond that and the first third is just putting Pattinson's Hansen character in unflattering camera angles. Literally a pointless film.

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

The film is not remotely pro-pedophile but Oppenheim put Robert Pattinson in way too many dark red-tinted shots to make me think that Primetime portrays Chris Hansen in a nuanced way. I don't think he's a sympathetic figure but it does seem like a straight hit piece.

[aidan! @obviouslystevie]

Kinda bizarre how right-wingers think the entertainment industry is evil yet they also think Chris Hansen’s primetime NBC tv show had noble intentions and is above criticism

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

@jessehawken I have serious problems with the film but these smoothbrained "Joos love pedos" critiques are going to make it harder to get my point across.

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

@RobGeorge Better Off Ted was great.

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

It was a old time Prime Time Soap but with bigger words and I loved it for that.

[David Burge @iowahawkblog]

Succession was the most loathsome, zero redeeming value TV show I have ever watched for more than 3 episodes, and I have a personal vendetta of revenge against everyone who told me to watch it and then assured me it would get better

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

@TristinHopper Even if there hasn't been a "Carney" in politics before it is a very Canadian politician coded name...

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

@chopperface69 @milesFF007F He's a pickup artist obviously.

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

@sophmilk580 That's a good question for discussing Canada's mosaic model of multiculturalism more broadly but if people here want to be called Inuit you call them Inuit even if people of similar ethnic background in other countries are actually fine with some variation of "eskimo".

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

Remember folks: the rules in Canada are different and the reason for that is probably a nuanced cultural difference dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries relating to how Canadians dealt with English-French and Protestant-Catholic divides rather than "political correctness".

[Tim Miller @Timodc]

Yesterday I spoke to Mary Peltola about whether I could say Eskimo or if it’s a case like the f slur where only the tribe is allowed.

An hour later the story came out.

(Answer; Inuit is like Latinx and Eskimo is fine to say)

@CourageousOp @Kredo0 If the Panama guy "walked out" it was because he really needed to pee.

@tmdess @NormOrnstein Minnesota Taxpayers gave us the Oregon Trail video game so they really should know better.

[Lolcow Soup @Lolcowsoup]

@kevinbaum013 Hopefully the Narnia movie redirects his anger.
