@runliftrunlift I do 12 repeats on my hill repeat days. The first three are moderate (after 10-minute warmup jog/walk), the next three are harder (70-75%), followed by three that are slightly easier, then the last three are 80-85% effort. My Achilles appreciates it - I don't like hearing from it
@runliftrunlift Muscle mass loss is driven by T loss, & T is a "use it or lose it" hormone at any age. In the last year, I've added significant muscle (more than 1 inch in my arms & almost 2 inches in my legs) via strength training; my T is way up now
Yeah, I love hill repeats & intervals, too
@runliftrunlift Moreover, it's a great lower leg strength builder, giving you more pop on the road or track - don't worry about pace or other running metrics, they all change on the grass and trail.
@runliftrunlift Couldn't agree more: running in 95+ F heat, heat indexes of 105 to 115 F - interval-type runs are great. I have three different workouts I use on those days.
I live in the Third Coast in the USA, and am just south of 70 years. Still trying to improve and grow as a runner...
@stevemagness We were out all day, every day. Mom only wanted to see us at lunch & dinner. The moms had a high-speed network - if you were in someone else's yard, that mom had the authority of your mom. Got in trouble? Your mom knew about it well before you got home - more trouble for you.
@DavidDack I used to be music, but changed. Why? I wanted to focus more on me, checking in with my body, checking my breathing, arm swing, footfall, cadence, etc without distraction or influence. And yeah, being alone with the silence that allows thoughts to flow, whether I want them or not
@runliftrunlift #3 and #4... Right now, my lifting is the priority, and it's paying off in my runs, but my runs are workouts, too: hill repeats, intervals, an easy run. I walk on lift days. Right now, it's more about overall fitness, and running is an important part of that.
@DavidDack I love them both, and strength training has made my running better. The problem for me is the need for recovery and not enough days in the week for all three...I am going to have to change my notice if a training week to a training cycle of maybe ten days or more...
@runliftrunlift I'm 69, still enjoying running, my joints are silent, I love running intervals & hill repeats. I do strength training - on my heavy lifting leg day, I hit 600+ lbs on the 45-degree leg press. This is encouragement to not surrender to "getting old" just b/c you finish a solar lap
@RealJamesWoods Thomas Jefferson once said, "When the people fear the government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty."
I want the government and everyone in it scared out of their minds.
@stevemagness Having a coach that let's you ask questions and explain things with intelligence is gold. Explaining the "why" connects mind, body, heart, and regiment
@joshpuckett I was talking with a friend about the need for genuine, walkable spaces - as green (flora) as possible - as a real augment to "health care" (as opposed to "sick care"). Useful spaces that connect to business & offices, not just "exercise spaces". But, real estate value....
@mkobach Because the Eclipse gene has not manifested itself since? That's what gave Secretariat a heart over two times larger than a standard thoroughbred. It might be another 50 years or more before we see that again.
@runliftrunlift "Recovery is when you get stronger," words Deena Kastor said that she wished she'd heeded in her younger days. What I've read about neuro-musculoskeletal recovery: it takes longer north of 50, & increases from there. It has to be respected, even when the cognitive mind says GO!
@RosaApostol03@stevemagness Aren't the volume runs supposed to be physiological adaptation? In other words, you do them to strengthen the body's systems for the "race training" in the periodization cycles. Duration and time on your feet, not pace, matters for the volume runs, right?
@stevemagness In every endeavor - athletics, the arts, STEM, et al - consistency and quality of effort reign supreme. "Natural greatness" is a myth, or at least extraordinarily rare. Time to mastery is always measured in years.
