In 2014, a BBC crew filmed something off the coast of South Africa that no one had seen before.

A pod of bottlenose dolphins, gently chewing a pufferfish. Not eating it. Just mouthing it, carefully, then passing it on. For over 30 minutes. The crew thought:

After all, Dolphins surf for fun.
They even play football with turtles.

But this was different.

Pufferfish release a super powerful tetrodotoxin when stressed — 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide. The dolphins knew exactly how much to take.

Afterwards, the whole pod floated to the surface, barely moving, staring at their own reflections.

The zoologist on set said they were "purposely experimenting with something we know to be intoxicating."
