What is GAFA?

GAFA is an acronym that stands for Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon.

It refers to the four major American tech companies that dominated the digital economy in the 2010s, often criticized for their massive market power, data collection practices, influence on society, and near-monopoly positions in their respective areas:

Google (now under Alphabet) — search, advertising, YouTube, Android, cloud, etc.

Apple — iPhone, App Store, hardware, services ecosystem.

Facebook (now Meta) — social media (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), advertising.

Amazon — e-commerce, cloud computing (AWS), logistics, streaming.

Why "GAFA"?

The term originated in Europe (especially France) around 2017–2018 as a way to talk about the growing power of these U.S. tech giants.

It's similar to FAANG (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google), which was more popular in investment/finance circles.

Sometimes it's updated to GAFAM (adding Microsoft) or Big Tech in general.

Context and Criticism

GAFA companies were (and still are) frequently accused of:

Antitrust issues and stifling competition

Privacy violations and surveillance capitalism

Spreading misinformation or influencing elections

Tax avoidance
Creating addictive products

European regulators in particular used "GAFA" when discussing new laws like the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and Digital Services Act (DSA) aimed at reining in their power.

Today, the acronym is a bit dated because:

Facebook rebranded to Meta
The group has expanded (TikTok/ByteDance is now often included as a major player)

Microsoft is frequently added due to its AI/cloud dominance
"Big Tech" or Magnificent 7 (adding Nvidia, Tesla, etc.) are more common now in finance

In short: GAFA = the original "Big Four" U.S. tech behemoths that reshaped the internet and global economy.

Born April 30, 1976, in Pomona, California, Glover graduated from Ontario High School and earned a B.S. in General Engineering from California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo) in 1999.

He later obtained three master's degrees: in Flight Test Engineering (U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School), Systems Engineering (Naval Postgraduate School), and Military Operational Art and Science.

He served as a Naval Aviator, logging over 3,000 flight hours in more than 40 aircraft (including the F/A-18 Hornet, Super Hornet, and EA-18G Growler), with 24 combat missions and over 400 carrier arrested landings.
