The Senegalese parliament has adopted a law that prohibits the President of the country from holding two positions.
According to the adopted draft law on the revision of the constitution, the President of the country cannot be head of a political party. This means that if you have a political party, once you become president, you leave the leadership of the party to another person.
According to parliament during the voting session on Monday, this reform aims to consolidate the rule of law, strengthen transparency in the management of public affairs, and modernize the institutions of the Republic.
“As such, it stipulates that the President of the Republic may no longer simultaneously hold the position of head of a political party, thus enshrine greater neutrality in the highest office,” said the Senegalese parliament.
“It also puts an end to the practice of holding multiple offices for members of the Government, who may no longer simultaneously serve as mayors or presidents of departmental councils,” it added.
Apart from banning dual office-holding, the law also forbids an outgoing president who is not seeking reelection from signing deals or contracts likely to bind the State in the long term or compromise its interests.
The law also makes it obligatory for the President of the Republic to declare his assets both upon taking office and upon leaving office, in the interest of transparency, accountability, and good governance.
“By adopting this law, the National Assembly reaffirms its commitment to strengthening institutions, consolidating democracy, and promoting exemplary governance in service to the Nation,” the Senegalese parliament said in a statement.
