There was no such thing as a single generational KKK. The group only emerged after the Civil War, when Yankees and Black people were put in charge of the South and allegedly oppressed—even assaulted—Southern women. That was seen as a second civil war, which the South won, after which the KKK dissolved.

A new version appeared in the 20th century, focused on nativism and opposing Catholics. Black communities kept to themselves, and whites didn’t pay them much attention. That KKK eventually turned into civic clubs and faded out in the 1950s, though they pushed separation of church and state to counter Catholics.

Lynching was seen as a form of frontier justice rather than a racial issue, and it declined in the 1940s when rural areas hired enough sheriffs and judges to handle criminals more efficiently.

In the 1960s, an underground group, sometimes calling themselves the KKK and occasionally violent, emerged in opposition to what they believed was a communist-driven desegregation movement, but it was eventually prosecuted and disbanded.
