Braves trade deadline thoughts:
Disappointed to not see a return on Ozuna, but if you set the precedent as GM that you’re a pushover in trade talks, it puts you at a disadvantage in the long run.
Also, no shot that anyone wanted an expensive reliever from a crapshoot bullpen.
The Atlanta Hawks are trading the No. 13 pick in the Draft to the New Orleans Pelicans for the No. 23 pick and an unprotected 2026 first round pick (most favorable of New Orleans and Milwaukee), sources tell ESPN.
- we need to make room in the pen for Daysbel Hernandez
- re-sign Minter. Likely to sign a reasonable extension
- draft a HS OF early for Acuña’s potential succession plan after 2028
- in summary: only guy we “need” to shed is Soler for the money & we should be much better in ‘25
Braves thoughts:
- overachievement making it to October, given the nonstop injuries
- thanks for everything & best of luck in LA/SD, Max
- replacing Max & Chuck: 3 solid options in AAA, but no lefties. Eye a buy-low scenario for Jordan Montgomery at the bottom of the rotation
- keep Arcia, but upgrade SS if we aren’t overpaying. Which is tricky because the FA class this year isn’t loaded
- Soler is a solid bat, but serves us no purpose as a defensive liability in OF + costly. Package him in a trade for a LHP and/or SS
- Bummer $7M club option?? BUYOUT
Why is it not already an NCAA requirement for all NIL deals to be mutually bound by a contract? You don’t show up to the first day of work merely on the premise of being compensated.
UNLV QB Matthew Sluka is out for season (NIL) despite 3-0 start 🤯
UNLV's starting QB Matthew Sluka was reportedly verbally offered $100K by an assistant coach to transfer from Holy Cross, but UNLV showed "no effort" to finalize a contract, per @PeteThamel
Sluka stepped down despite a 3-0 start after only receiving $3K for relocation. His reps say he didn't ask for more than the original $100K.

This is bigger than him - he at least altered the stats, if not careers, of the pitchers who he was tipping off. The consequence needs to be more severe than just releasing him.
Sue for his 300k signing bonus and disperse that among all of the pitchers that he caught this year.
Twins 2024 6th round pick Derek Bender has been released less than 2 months after being drafted
Bender was telling opposing hitters what pitches were coming in a game with playoff implications, per @JeffPassan. The team went on to lose this game and were eliminated.
@DarthEldniw@UmpireAuditor The pitch was a high & in fastball that missed on the low outside corner, forcing the catcher to chase it with his mitt instead of framing it. It’s an unrealistic expectation of umpires to deem such a big miss in a borderline location as a strike
