Bill Ackman runs a $20+ billion hedge fund and has a staggering net worth of $5+ billion

What most people don't know is he started a hedge fund right out of biz school w/ a relatively modest sum of capital

He explains how he raised money for his first fund:

"We raised a total of $3.1 million dollars...

It was fun. It was bit like blind dating. A lot of blind dates, not much success

I think we eventually saw well over 100 people and we had 6 people ultimately say yes

So what was interesting was anyone who knew me as a kid wouldn't give us money...they perceived me as a high school kid or a elementary school kid

But of the original 6 investors, 4 of the 6 were in the Forbes 400 wealthiest people in America.

So we went to people who were worth $400 million and we asked them for a half a million

The people who were entrepreneurs really liked the idea of backing a couple of young guys that were entrepreneurs and I think that was a big part of the connection

[When we raised $2.6 million] my partner David Berkowitz said 'Bill, unless we raise $3 million, I'm not going forward with you...'

When we went to see investors, we wrote up a number of investment ideas and we wrote up ideas for four companies

One of the guys we went to see was the heir of a famous NYC real estate family and he turned us down but he invested in all our ideas

One of [the companies] was up +90% between the time we saw him, one was up +50%

Later he calls us up sheepishly, and he says:

'Look, I invested in your ideas and I felt it was morally wrong for me not to invest with you guys...'

And he gave us a half million bucks. And that was the increment that got us over the $3 million mark!"
