On Monday, 6 February 2023, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Türkiye, centered in the city of Kahramanmaraş, near the Syrian border. Several hours later, a second 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit the same region. In this disaster of unprecedented scale and severity, more than 53,000 people lost their lives. It is estimated that the amount of debris generated in Türkiye alone reached approximately 100 million cubic meters. The recovery and reconstruction process will take many years to complete.

Conditions in Türkiye have still not returned to normal. Making TS2023 work permits temporary means leaving us once again alone with the same fear and uncertainty. Please allow the people you invited through humanitarian assistance to rebuild their lives with dignity and stability.

The February 6, 2023 earthquakes in Türkiye are recorded as the deadliest earthquakes worldwide since the 2010 Haiti earthquake, which claimed over 300,000 lives.
