It’s hardly surprising that many journalists and influencers appear to have learned nothing from the excesses of the #MeToo movement.

The Atlantic, however, ran some of the best essays on its excesses—and on the importance of due process for the accused in general.

To turn around and suspend @Yascha_Mounk based on an accusation leveled with no accompanying evidence represents a profound betrayal of principle.

To feel reflexive sympathy with alleged victims is totally natural. And it’s precisely because such feelings of sympathy are so automatic that we *must* presume the innocence of the accused and rely on neutral, time-tested institutions (rather than say, employers) to arbitrate the truth and dole out punishments.

It may not always feel right. But time and time again, history shows that the only alternative is the hot-blooded justice of witch hunts and lynch mobs.
