@CondeMiah @ElissaMMonteiro Definitely! There’s so much more to a sport than just practice and games. How could they gain experience or even an internship with so much on their plate? The NCAA, coaches and programs need to show more interest in SA education. #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
A sport takes up majority of a SA’s day, with such overload they don’t realize how important experience and internships are in getting a job. There should be better resources to help SA’s prepare and prioritize. Education should come first! #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
@alexismvera98@ElissaMMonteiro All these lawsuits yet the NCAA continues to exploit their athletes. It is unfair that athletes overwork themselves and receive no benefits while the NCAA lays back and makes millions. With a number of SAs speaking up we can make change happen. #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
The amount of lawsuits filed against the NCAA should prove that something is not right. They continue to take advantage of athletes, yet not much changes. Athletes were literally compared to prison inmates in Liver v. NCAA. #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
It is unbelievable the amount of limitations and restrictions that NCAA 4-4 puts on students athletes. Athletes should have more freedom on choosing to transfer, all these rules make it seem impossible. #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
@kpric006 @ElissaMMonteiro The solution that Mitchell presents seems fair! It allows a student to transfer with an opportunity to play, but at the same time limits them. The NCAA needs to work towards forming a transfer policy that is fair to athletes as well, not just coaches. #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
@Karennplasc Exactly, coaches need to create a better relationship/environment in which they show more care for their athletes health over a game. Plus coaches and players should be properly educated about concussions. #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
The likelihood of sustaining a concussion in a contact sport is as high as 20% per season. Coaches and the NCAA need to take this more serious, follow protocol and make sure their players feel safe & comfortable coming forward about their symptoms. #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
@alexismvera98@ElissaMMonteiro This is a good example of the NCAA violating Title IX. Women’s Basketball was definitely discriminated against. The NCAA claimed they didn’t have enough space or money to provide the same resources for female athletes. I doubt that’s true! #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
Title IX is supposed to provide gender equity in both men’s and women’s sports. The NCAA needs to do better at treating it’s male and female athletes the same & that includes providing the same for both! Women work just as hard as men do! #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
@tan_gon99@ElissaMMonteiro The NLI has been glorified by student athletes excited to begin college. This contract simply protects the University rather than the athlete. What about protection for the student athletes? #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
National Signing Day is something many student athletes look forward to. The NLI primarily protects the University and barely any protection for the athletes. Little do they know everything else that comes along with it. @ElissaMMonteiro#ucr150
@kpric006 @PhillipRehkemp2 @ElissaMMonteiro Do you think it’s possible to find some type of balance? Where athletes can be compensated but also focus on their college education. #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
@Rachael16450674 @ElissaMMonteiro Exactly. The NCAA continues to take advantage of these athletes. They claim to care about the well-being of their players and think a small scholarship resolves that issue. Why is it so hard for the NCAA to simply care about their athletes? #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
The NCAA creates its own definition of amateurism to protect their own profit and they do that without caring about the well-being of its athletes. It’s unfair that out of the millions they make student athletes can’t even touch a dollar. #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
@tan_gon99@ElissaMMonteiro Exactly, a lot of times student athletes have to use out of pocket money for meals, gas, rent, etc. Yet they can’t be compensated for their work. As it is a sport takes up a great amount of time, how are athletes supposed to make time for a job? #UCR150@ElissaMMonteiro
@JonickPineda@ElissaMMonteiro I totally agree.
Women’s basketball makes billions for the NCAA yet they are allowed no profit from it. On top of fighting for respect it’s ridiculous that female athletes still have to fight for equality as well! #ucr150@ElissaMMonteiro
College athletes need to be fairly compensated. The NCAA makes millions while their athletes worry about their next meal and get no profit. And let’s not get started on women’s sports! #edu150@ElissaMMonteiro
Can you imagine what it’s like to generate millions in revenue for your school—without being able to afford a hot meal off campus?
It’s madness that we don’t pay college athletes.
In the @PlayersTribune, I wrote about why: https://t.co/7dD9wirK9D
