A blessing before battle captured in bronze:
On July 2, 1863, Father William Corby, C.S.C., delivered absolution to the troops on both sides of the Civil War prior to the Battle of Gettysburg.
“Don't let your life be sterile. Be useful. Blaze a trail. Shine forth with the torch of your faith and your love. With your apostolic life wipe out the trail of slime and filth left by the corrupt sowers of hatred. And set aflame all the ways of the earth with the fire of Christ.”
— St. Josemaria Escriva
A blessed feast day to all!
Three cheers for Pope Leo's comments regarding the Christian foundations of Europe and the defense of the unborn. Echoing the sentiments of Pope Benedict XVI, Leo reminded his audience that the essential structures of European society and Europe's commitment to human rights are unthinkable apart from Christianity. And speaking before a hard-left Spanish Parliament, the Pope presented an admirably consistent ethic of life, defending migrants, to be sure, but also insisting that no society which "casts into the shadows" the unborn can be called truly just. With bracing clarity, he insisted, "Every human life must be recognized and safeguarded from conception to its natural end, in every circumstance of its existence." And he concluded that "the moral greatness of a nation" is manifested in this principle. That he has been received so warmly in Spain I take to be an encouraging sign that the people of that country, especially the youth, have finally had it with a soul-flattening secularist ideology.
.@IrishRoverND reported this morning that a @NotreDame spokesperson "confirmed to the Rover that Notre Dame has not changed its position, as of February 8" with respect to the Ostermann appointment. This following a meeting of the Board of Trustees and Fellows last week.
It was rumored that the matter would come up for discussion. Whether it did is uncertain. Needless to say, the message that Father Dowd is sending to the Catholic community by letting the appointment stand gets clearer by the day.
If this is what “building bridges” looks like, we’ll be sunk in the River Kwai. And if this is “what we owe each other,” there will be nothing left. #GoCatholicND

I want to express my strong support for the statement that Bishop Kevin Rhoades made this morning concerning a controversial appointment at the University of Notre Dame. Please read his communication in full, for he makes the case more completely and eloquently than I could. Suffice it to say that the woman proposed for a key leadership position at Our Lady’s University is not simply “pro-choice” on the question of abortion; she is a sharp critic of the pro-life position and those who advocate it. She has gone so far as to characterize the anti-abortion stance as rooted in white supremacy and racism, and she has insinuated that the Catholic commitment to integral human development implies the support of abortion rights.
Like Bishop Rhoades, I speak as someone with strong connections to and deep affection for the University of Notre Dame. I believe that going ahead with this appointment is repugnant to the identity and mission of that great center of Catholic learning.

Remember: both of these stories tell us aspects of what's going on at Notre Dame.
Don't let your alarm over the one on the R prevent you from celebrating the good of the one on the L; and similarly, don't let your exciement about L mute your legitimate concern about R.
Notre Dame junior Lucy Spence has written a superb letter to the editor criticizing the university’s appointment of a pro-abortion professor to lead the Liu Institute:
“Our provost, John McGreevy, announced last year that the hiring of women and minorities would become a priority equal to that of hiring Catholics. Ostermann’s appointment, presumably an implementation of McGreevy’s plan, is doing nothing to aid women at Notre Dame. It is doing the opposite, promoting the saddest lie ever told to them: that their children are disposable.”

.@PressSec warned the nation about New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s socialist agenda last Thursday at a press briefing.
But someone else is about to join the party.
