Happy birthday to the 19th President of Liberia, the late William Tubman: Liberia's CEO for 27 Years.
• Took office in 1944 when Liberia was broke.
• Pitched an "Open Door Policy"—invited foreign
investors like Firestone.
• The economy boomed, but inequality grew.
Ordinary Liberians got little, sparking frustration that simmered long after he was gone.
He wasn’t just about business.
• Pushed for African unity (helped create the OAU).
• Loved parades, ceremonies, and playing statesman.
4️⃣ The plot twist: Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬
• It's not even in Africa - located in Oceania! 🌏
• Originally just "Papua"
• Now the most populous Pacific Island nation.
🧵 Ever wondered why FOUR countries have "Guinea" in their name?
The story begins with the Berber term "Akka-Guiné," which means "land of the blacks."
European explorers adopted this name for the West African coast.
Here's how we ended up with four Guineas...
3️⃣ Enter Equatorial Guinea (ex-Spanish Guinea). 🇬🇶
• Named for its location near the Equator
• Smallest of the "Guinea" nations
• Has Africa's longest-serving president (since 1979!)
