Checking out from tonight’s game. The tempo ebbed and flowed from start to finish but provided some real drama in the last 15. The gamecocks are a good team but need to start winning some of these games that could go either way again.

Full Time: #gamecocks 1-1 #HailWV

The teams share the points in a game that they may feel could’ve been won. High drama with two big refereeing calls overturned but both sides forced to settle. The gamecocks now host Kentucky on Saturday winless in three

Jacob Redenfors is the one who takes, but his effort is straight at Scheidenweiler. A minute later he has another effort from a long Ishii throw-in, but his tame header drifts wide.

Now into the last five minutes and a winner for either side is still on the cards. Velazquez-Lopez is adjudged to have fouled again, though this time in a far more dangerous position 20 yards out in prime territory.

Both coaches have successfully challenged huge decisions by the referee that could have swung this game in any direction. Correct decisions have been reached in the end but not without drama.

‘83 NO GOAL: #gamecocks 1-1 #HailWV

Alejandro Velazquez-Lopez is adjudged to have pushed de Jesus Ferreira in the build up. The contact was minimal, but there was enough to prevent the defender from challenging Ortiz who was able to finish with little pressure.

‘83 GOAL: #gamecocks 2-1 #HailWV

Matthew Lank puts a ball into the box which is headed down into the corner by Christian Ortiz from six yards. Wait. The WV bench has challenged wanting a foul for a push by Velazquez-Lopez who created space for Ortiz to head home.

Habel’s night looks to be over as Jamie Grayson has shifted over to right back. The freshman has looked comfortable tonight, starting a game for the first time this season, and now moves from centre back.

A draw doesn’t really help either side and they would both remain behind Georgia Southern and James Madison if the scoreline stayed the same. Both are looking to change it, however and you could see a winner for either side.

The hosts break a couple of challenges down the left again and Jacob Redenfors sweeps in a teasing low ball that evades all in the middle. Mika Habel is down having committed one of those challenges and walks off the pitch.

That could have been trouble for Whittaker-Francis, who was already on a yellow card. No doing though, and the tough tackling midfielder lives to fight another day.

‘75 no penalty: gamecocks 1-1 #HailWV

The referee reviews and overturns his decision. Vindication perhaps for the gamecocks as Whittaker-Francis appears to have hooked the ball from around Sheer’s legs, rather than having gone through them.

‘75 penalty: #gamecocks 1-1 #HailWV

Isaac Sheer is brought down by a sliding challenge from Whittaker-Francis. The gamecock players are furious, as is Head Coach Annan who is up from his blue chair and uses his first challenge. The referee is at the monitor.

The game is opening up with chances at either end. A break down the left by Pablo Posos is just about ended by some joint gamecock defending before Velazquez-Lopez underhits a pass on a promising breakaway for the away side.

This time Velazquez-Lopez has his reward. Sany Kong battles down the left inside the area and eventually shifts the ball across to Velazquez-Lopez who is there to roll in from close range. A deserved leveller.

Alejandro Velazquez-Lopez jinxes around a mountaineer before curling a great effort towards the top-right. His effort is matched by Toby Mawer in goal though who tips wide at full extension.

Omar Rabbana sloppily gives the ball away on the edge of the area but is bailed out by a brilliant Jamie Grayson block as Pozos strikes. The resulting corner is headed goalwards by Recalde but is smartly stopped by Scheidweiler.

Pablo Pozos dinks a cute ball in behind to Julen Recalde who tries to round Scheidweiler with his first touch. The gamecocks’ ‘keeper is brave though and smothers Recalde who gives away a free kick in the resulting challenge.

The game has now entered a rhythm with most of the action being played in the middle. Both teams’ threat still lies out wide but getting into those dangerous positions is becoming more difficult.

These two teams are evenly matched to the point that their best chances are coming in almost identical fashion. Velazquez-Lopez takes one down on the edge of the box but his shot is deflected by Julen Recalde for a corner.
