Christianity is a religion for women falls apart the moment you find out how the Church actually defines effeminacy.

Aquinas gave it a name. Mollities. Softness. He was not talking about a soft body or a gentle temperament. He was describing a man who will not surrender a pleasure or endure a difficulty for the sake of something higher. A man who folds the second the work stops feeling good.

Sit with that definition and think about who it describes. The man who cannot fast for one day. Who cannot get up when the alarm goes. Whose word dissolves the moment keeping it costs him something. That is effeminacy in the Catholic tradition, and it usually belongs to the loudest man in the comments telling you the faith is for women.

The Stoics wanted the passions dead. Augustine went after them for it, because a man with no anger in the face of real evil has not achieved mastery, he has gone numb. Aquinas says the same thing. The absence of anger where anger is owed is a defect in reason, not a sign of holiness. Your aggression, your appetite, your drive to conquer something are all meant to stay alive and stay under command.

So the training, the fasting, the rule of life you keep when nobody is watching, all of it is you taking the reins of something already strong and aiming it at the highest good. That is the whole project. Nothing about it is soft.

Perhaps it doesn’t suit your political point-scoring post to acknowledge the raw anger that still exists around this case.

Many people don’t understand why, when given sanctuary in this country, a couple of Rwandan immigrants produced a son who became radicalised, engaged with terrorist material and went on to commit one of the worst atrocities this country has seen in recent years. Perhaps the answer is obvious. Perhaps he was carrying the inherited trauma of his parents. After all, they came from a country that, within living memory, experienced a horrific genocide in which hundreds of thousands of people were killed with machetes.

People are also angry about the authorities’ response. Initially, the emphasis was on the fact that he was a Cardiff-born teenager rather than the son of Rwandan immigrants. That made many people feel they were being misled about the perpetrator’s link to foreign shores.

And it’s no wonder people feel like they’re lied to about the less positive impacts of immigration, is it? There are more than 10,000 foreign national offenders in Britain’s prisons, and because of overcrowding there’s talk of releasing criminals back onto the streets.

Your post rather illustrates the left’s response to such heinous crimes and terrorist attacks. Something unspeakable has happened, and it’s happened in the context of our immigration policies. It’s not the first time something like this has happened, yet the left so often focuses less on the terrible event itself and more on condemning any expressions of public anger, posting that “hate won’t divide us”.

What happened in Southport was hate embodied. Yet here you are, having another pop at “right-wingers”. That says it all.
