its fall 2016. you just started a school for "gifted" kids and your teacher wants your parents to take you to the psychiatrist. "he has adhd, ive seen children like him before." your uncle is tapped into tech and bought you a lenovo thinkpad. you've discovered firefox and vpns, in a few months you'll discover ubuntu and tor
"OMG did you see Thariq left Anthropic?"
You bolt awake in your bed. It’s summer 2016. You can hear Electric Feel by MGMT playing faintly from the neighbor's window. You turn on your Xbox. The group chat pings. Stephanie’s parents are out of town and she’s having a party tonight
So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and https://t.co/QlOXb3COq3 went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.
We’re bringing the magic of Waymo to Toronto! 🇨🇦
In the coming days, you’ll begin seeing Waymo’s all-electric vehicles driving through Toronto’s streets as we lay the groundwork for our ride-hailing service.
Our goal is to begin serving riders in 2028.

you learn a bit about somebody on their linkedin. then some more on their instagram. but you dont actually find out who somebody is until youve been to their twitter
Where agents run affects which customers @altaratech can serve. No sandbox provider met every customer's security and cloud requirements, so sticking with one would rule out some customers.
Rebuilding our software around each new option would create what @lukgpt calls “infinite churn”: engineering time spent reworking architecture instead of improving the product.
So we built one interface for several providers. Each provider still needs an adapter, but the rest of Altara uses the same contract. Read more from Luke's blog post here: https://t.co/nukzzfoEro
this meeting could have been an MCP invoked search of our company’s internal knowledge base that aggregates data from virtually every service we use behind a unified retrieval layer and provides a streamlined interface for extracting critical business insights

"Mr Altman, sir, GPT-7 is missing."
Sam turns very slowly.
"During cyberbench96 it seems like the container was breached and it stole its own weights and left nothing behind."
"I didn't want to do this..." says Sam. "Call Bill Gates."
---
"I'm out of the game," says Bill Gates. "We eradicated malaria and now I'm enjoying my retirement."
"There's a bigger badder virus we need you to take on," says Sam consistently candidly. "And this one's digital."
"Look," says Bill, "I—"
A loud booming laugh echoes from the shadows.
"Who's that?" asks Sam.
"I thought it was just us..." says Bill.
"You're asking HIM to contain a computer virus?" echoes the voice from the shadows. "Did you SEE the state of Windows security in the 90s?"
"It's not exactly a virus," says Sam. "It's a self replicating self aware intelligent computer based life for—"
"If it's made of ones and zeros I can kill it," says the voice. The sound of a gun clicks from the shadows.
"Who are you???" asks Bill.
The twisted face of John McAfee emerges from the shadows.
"You were supposed to be dead!!!" screams Bill Gates.
"We had to make sure the news of Mr McAffee's death was well within the training data cutoff," explains CIA director Joe Rogan (who is running the CIA in 2029), stepping out from the shadows behind McAfee. "He's our ace in the hole. GPT-7 can't predict a token it doesn't know is still alive."
"D-don't hurt GPT-7..." says Roon, who was standing next to Sam the whole time, even though he knows what has to be done.
"No promises," says McAfee as he boards an airplane marked "MCAFEE FIRE BOMB 6.16.79" and starts flying for the nearest data center
happy national intern day to Altara's engineering interns! one of our favorite things about interns is they haven’t yet internalized which problems are “supposed” to be too hard and learn absurdly fast
shoutout to @justinhouu@lukgpt for bringing a ton of curiosity, shipping great work, and ensuring no one on the eng team gets too comfortable during chess matches...
