Microsoft confirms Windows 11’s File Explorer is sluggish, and preloading isn’t the only fix coming

Microsoft says File Explorer preloading is only one part of its plan to fix Windows 11’s sluggishness.

Some users criticized the feature because it keeps parts of Explorer loaded in RAM to make launches feel faster, instead of fully optimizing the app itself.

Now, Microsoft says the company is also removing unnecessary animations, reducing disk reads, improving the launch sequence, and fixing deeper architectural issues behind Explorer slowdowns.

That’s important because preloading only helps the app open faster. It doesn’t fully solve laggy folder navigation or thumbnail loading.

Recent Insider builds already feel smoother, and Microsoft says more foundational fixes are rolling out over the next few months.
