It's tough out there. Young people are bearing the brunt of this hard economy. Here are a few nuggets to help you navigate the marketplace.
1. Commit to lifelong learning. Technology is disrupting a lot of industries. You will be quickly left behind if you are not committed to learning. Stay aware of the latest innovation in your career path, and your value will increase quickly in the marketplace. Some new types of skills are now being sought after, video editing, prompt engineering etc. Please keep an eye out.
2. Understand that you are entering the market in a particularly tough time economically in Africa. Jobs are not free flowing. This means you have to prepare your mind for a fight. There are so many people chasing few opportunities. Getting a No may not be a reflection of your abilities, so don't be hard on yourself.
3. Money is not the most important in the first few years. "Focus on what you are becoming, not what you are getting." If you are fortunate to have a knowledgeable/kind superior on your first job, be a sponge, soak up as much knowledge as possible. Don't be in a hurry to leave for money when you are in a place soaking knowledge.
4. Understand that skills are valued differently and locations pay differently as well. Think globally/ internationally. Do not restrict yourself to the local market, do research on skills employers in other places are looking for, and build up on those skills. Let your online profile reflect what you are doing, engage professionals online, and build your knowledge/network bank.
5. There is no better time to seek opportunities globally and join global professional organisations in your field. It will help your profile a lot when applying for jobs worldwide. E.g If you are a civil engineer, can you be a member of ICE, IStructE, etc.
6. You can also start looking at opportunities to study abroad. If you take the GRE/GMAT exams and score very high, there are a good number of universities in the US that will give you scholarships, The UK also has the Chevening, Mastercard scholarships, etc Erasmus Mundus is there in Europe, Daad is there in Germany. Please look around. There is golden information online.
7. The Internet is the biggest equaliser of all. Bring your skills to the internet. Tell the world your story and your capacity. You will be shocked at the results.
8. "It's your attitude, not your aptitude that will determine your altitude." Love this quote by Zig Ziglar
Your hard skills will get you in, and your soft skills will help you stay. Have the right attitude to work and your colleagues, invest in communication skills and emotional intelligence. You will grow in leaps and bounds.
I will stop there for now. Keep learning, growing, and progressing. May God bless you🙏
