Let's talk about your projects and how to apply electron microscopy - the dark side of microscopy!
I study the most beautiful creatures in the animal kingdom- " Birds"
My project deals with studying impact of chemical pollutants on wading bird migration.
Ultimate goal: To help prevent chemical pollution and ensure successful migration of birds

Aquaculture 🐟 is hugely important for global food security, disease 🦠 however causing huge economic losses💸 worldwide.
Comparing microbiomes of diseased and healthy fishes, I'm looking for microbial shifts to predict diseases in fish and mitigate economic losses.

Looking at the 🤑of pest predation of 🦇 in vineyards 🍷under climate change.
Using state-of-the-art eDNA, Species distribution Modelling, lots of fun fieldwork and economic analysis.

Camera systems offer an amazing opportunity to to monitor our seas🌊📸
But who watches all the video?
I am investigating how we can use AI to identify fish in underwater video to support marine monitoring and conservation🤖

1000s of 🧪chemicals enter our 🏞️ waterways with unknown effects on the environment❓
One of these chemicals are 💊 antibiotics which disrupt free-living bacteria and microbiomes🦠
I study the effects of antibiotics on 🐟 microbiomes and their overall health

Oceanographers love the ocean | Biogeochemists love mud
Blue Carbon travels through these but what happens in between?
🪱🦐🦞🦪🪼🦀🐚🐌 Are all busy making their homes and living life but how the modify carbon sequestration is pretty unknown!
We plan to find out! #HSEAway23
Are mangroves sinks for plastic pollution? 🏝️
I am investigating this in the unique and incredibly biodiverse #Galapagos archipelago🌊🐢

We discharge lots of chemicals in freshwater on a daily basis. But freshwater is not all the same! Water chemistry might affect the uptake of ionisable compounds in fish by changing the electrical properties of 🐟gills... This is what I try to understand! #HSEAway23#PhD
#BangladeshAquaculture: Where & what to farm? I'll be mapping & analysing water resources & pollution, and assessing habitat/biodiversity impacts. The goal? Identify the most sustainable aquaculture locations & practices to protect environment in Bangladesh 🐟🌿 #HSEAway23
To grow 🦐 must shed their shell.
I look at how they rebuild 🧑🔧 their shell and if we can improve calcification efficiency to reduce disease 🦠 + cannibalism 🍽️

Duckweeds are tiny plants 🌱floating on freshwater.
They reproduce clonally and can double their biomass in 48 hours.🌱➡️🌱🌱
They also have a high protein content and have potential as bioremediators.
Can duckweeds save the world? #HSEAway23
How does water chemistry impact calcification and ion regulation in marine invertebrates?
.
I am specifically working on how seawater calcium availability impacts mounting in farmed prawns. 🦐
.
Looking at optimizing aquaculture sustainability!

Seaweed farms are expanding globally & offer a potentially sustainable food source 🍜👩🌾
But what are the environmental impacts?
My PhD assesses how UK farms impact biodiversity & may provide new 🏡 to fish & invert species 🦀🐟

🐟 farms ➡️ 📈 🌊 CO2 ➡️ 📉 🐟 growth & welfare ☠
Lump🐟 are farmed & used as 🧼🐟 in salmon farming, 📉 🦠 by 97 % 🎉
👩🏽🔬 🔎 @ 🌊 chemistry manipulation 📈 lump🐟 growth and welfare

Dr Ceri Lewis @CezzaLewis is a marine biologist studying the impacts of human induced global changes on marine animals. She engages with school children around the world through online lessons live from the field, including the High Arctic and the Galapagos Islands.
After Mum's heart attack yesterday, I am putting this out there.
Heart Attacks present differently in Women, and if my Dad hadn't acted as quickly as he had, things may have been a very different story today.
