The selloff continues. Next, I’m shifting from shorting beta to shorting alpha. I call it the “reverse bottleneck trade”—the counterpart to the earlier bottleneck trade.
The logic is simple: AI demand will keep growing, but that growth may slow, while upstream suppliers keep expanding capacity in response to shortages and fat margins. Once effective supply catches up with demand, bargaining power shifts back downstream. During a shortage, customers care first about availability. Good enough will do. Once supply is plentiful, they start comparing performance, cost, power consumption, and reliability again. That’s when we find out who wins orders on competitiveness and who was simply picking up overflow because the leaders couldn’t supply enough.
My watchlist includes memory runner-up MU, second- and third-tier optical players COHR and AAOI, and foundry runner-up INTC.
This trade doesn’t even require the AI bubble to burst. Supply growth just needs to start outpacing demand growth. I think there’s a very high probability these stocks put in an “Everest chart” over the next year—a towering peak followed by a collapse back down. If you don’t have the stomach to go all-in on outright shorts, anti-bottleneck pair trades are another good way to express the view: long LITE / short AAOI; long TSM / short INTC; long NVDA / short AMD or AVGO.
