Butler Lampson builds the Alto at Xerox PARC. It has a bitmapped display, a mouse and overlapping windows, and it is the machine every personal computer since has been copying.

He publishes Hints for Computer System Design. The opening sentence sets the register for the whole genre. He writes that he has designed and built a number of computer systems, some that worked and some that did not.

Not a framework. A field report with the failures left in.

The paper does one thing: it helps you decide where in a system a given function belongs. Which piece owns which job, and what it costs you to put it in the wrong place.

There is also the second half of the indirection joke, the part that gets dropped. Adding a layer solves your problem and hands you a new one, which is exactly what a harness wrapping a loop wrapping a graph does to your debugging.
