@crownweber literally the exact same thing as "clairo matcha performative male" stuff now. hipsterism is an attitude and social position more than a taste, when you get too exposed as following a trend you scurry to a deeper one. doesn't happen the same way anymore
@SamGreszes i'm seeing lana del rey being brought up here as if the general consensus in 2012 wasn't that she was the world's most obvious fake AI industry plant! I kind of liked video games but I was half convinced she wasn't a real person!
@2020Pera@andrewdsacher They were already there! Their first album was famously the fastest-selling debut by any UK act! They won Time's album of the year in 2006!
do people not see how funny it is to say “hipsters didn’t listen to radio rock like mumford & the lumineers. they listened to vampire weekend, arctic monkeys, MGMT, and tame impala”
Weird seeing this hipster discourse yet again and none of the bands people are talking about are what I was listening to in 2003-2010 (yes I am saying my taste was more obscure and therefore better)
@gusselsprouts yeah, the quality of the bands accused of this are all over the place (some are very good!) but it entirely depends upon in-group signaling over what you're "allowed" to like
@elite_gz big difference is that the internet was a networking/advertising method for real life. you made an album, you did art, you did something in the real world. now the stuff you do in real life is secondary to social media
@LyxPar@PetreRaleigh I don't know how to tell you that the "Chad" is a fictional caricature that was designed by incels and losers, and not really a real person, but that stock character archetype has changed considerably!
@LyxPar@PetreRaleigh The Chad himself is downstream of "Shit was so cash" guy, which again portrays him as some mean asshole douchebag which the virgins have resentment for
