ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA — September 7, 2026 — The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA), the continent's largest civil society movement working on food systems, food sovereignty and agroecology, is set to open today its Continental Convening on Strengthening African Civil Society Climate Action on Food Systems and Agriculture Towards #COP31 and #COP32. Organised by AFSA in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Planning and Development, the three-day gathering runs from September 7 to 9, 2026, at the Inter Luxury Hotel in Addis Ababa, and is shaping up to be one of the continent's most significant climate convenings this year, bringing together farmers, pastoralists, fisherfolk, indigenous communities, youth and women's networks, researchers, negotiators, government officials and policymakers from across Africa.

Government officials and policymakers are integral participants in the Convening, not merely guests at its opening. The programme's official opening features H.E. Dr. Fitsum Assefa, Ethiopia's Minister for Planning and Development, delivering the official opening address, alongside remarks from H.E. Demeke Mekonnen, Nutrition Ambassador and former Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia. A keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Antwi-Boasiako Amoah, Chair of the African Group of Negotiators (AGN). Government representatives continue to participate alongside civil society throughout the three days, including a dedicated Day Two panel with government representatives on national priorities for #COP31 and #COP32.

Our food systems are under intense pressure from unsustainable methods of food production, such as the use of hazardous chemicals that are degrading our soils, harming biodiversity and threatening human health.

We have inaugurated the 6th Cohort of the Agroecology School for Journalists and Communicators for a 12-week immersive journey into understanding #agroecology. Over this period, journalists will explore how agroecology can produce safe, nutritious food, strengthen small-scale farmers’ livelihoods, create demand for sustainably produced food and open opportunities in local and regional markets.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐘𝐚𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞́ 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐨 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐈𝐭𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞

After three days of dialogue in Yaoundé, Cameroon, the Second Congo Basin Convening has closed with 187 delegates from 20 countries adopting a 24-point regional declaration for agroecology, food systems, biodiversity and climate justice in the Congo Basin. This isn't a statement of good intentions — it names numbers, deadlines and a mandate: at least 30% of relevant food-system budgets dedicated to agroecology, secured community land rights and free, prior and informed consent, protected farmer seed systems, and at least 20% of climate and biodiversity finance flowing directly to farmer organisations, women, youth, Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

Governments, civil society, researchers, the private sector and media all leave Yaoundé with commitments of their own — and AFSA has been mandated to raise the funding and host the regional coordination unit that will carry this Declaration into action across the Congo Basin.

Closing the session, Elisabeth Atangana, President of CNOP-CAM and Treasurer of the AFSA Board, put a question to every delegate in the room: "What part of the Declaration depends on me?" The history of the Congo Basin, she said, will be written by those who turn commitments into action — not by those who make the finest speeches. Progress will be tracked and reported publicly, call by call, ahead of the Third Congo Basin Convening.

As #LandAwarenessWeek2026 comes to a close, communities in the Rwenzori Sub-region have petitioned the Minister of Lands, Hon. Harriet Ntabazi, seeking redress on long-standing land disputes.

The Minister urged CSOs present to step up land rights sensitisation, and called on magistrates and judges to follow up on land cases for timely resolution. She received the petitions and committed to follow up on the concerns raised, noting that 90% of the land issues would be resolved very soon.

The focus now shifts to ensuring that the concerns raised are followed through to meaningful redress.

In the Town Councils of Karadoba and Kashari, long-standing land conflicts are once again raising a critical question on how communities can secure the land they have known as home amid competing claims.

In Karadoba, communities facing eviction amid claims by Kilembe Mines over land they have occupied for years are seeking resolution. In Kashari, a community of about 238 people is pursuing legal avenues after a court recognised another party as the lawful owner.

@ministry_lands spokesperson @dennisfo2002 urged the affected residents to pursue legal redress to resolve the disputes. “Also, work with our lawyers here and connect them to your lawyers so that you are better supported,” he said.

Florence Alaba, 67, from Barkwolo Village, Alaro Parish in Apac district, inherited 50 acres from her parents. A family dispute later saw clan elders divide the land, leaving her with 20 acres. Years on, her son is contesting even the portion allocated to her, threatening her land rights.

@ESAFFUG is helping to turn the tide through #TheLandCamp2026, bringing free legal aid and practical land-rights information closer to communities in Apac. The intervention will support up to 3,000 residents to safeguard their land through the acquisition of Certificates of Customary Ownership (CCOs).

Answer: "The prison land was taken in 1972. How many years have passed since then? When government acquires land, it compensates those on it. That is why we are asking people to register their land. You need to establish whether the land was gifted or acquired. If it was gifted and the person is no longer there, you may not be able to reclaim it. But if it was acquired, the matter can be followed up"- Dennis Obbo.
