A reminder that Mayor Anne Hidalgo will go down as one of the most consequential mayors of the modern time: a mayor who literally built 600 miles of bike lanes and made hundreds of streets car free in her 12 years as Paris mayor. Bravo.
@ThomasMHern It doesn't matter if the killer was a communist or fascist. Political violence isn't okay and should be condemned by our leaders (as Dems did with Kirk, but Repubs did not with Pelosi or the MN reps).
@MeghanMcCain The left does not glorify death. There are a small minority of extremists (right and left) who revel in the deaths of political opponents. If AOC had been shot yesterday, I guarantee you we would have seen gleeful videos from far-right accounts. This isn't a partisan issue.
The Northern Liberties housing success story should be more of a guiding light for the Mission 30,000 initiative. Housing construction is way up, but this area also has the slowest rent growth AND the fastest lease-up rate in the city, per Costar
Americans want to:
- live in exclusive single-family neighborhoods
- with public transit
- and abundant free parking
- walking distance to cafes and schools
- and views of the mountains or ocean
- but no neighbors within earshot
- and no traffic
- and no fires or floods
It's something we could solve tomorrow. Add speed cameras to all highways across the US, then issue warnings. "The speed limit is actually the speed limit. You will be fined X dollars next time you go over the limit."
We don't because we humor law-breaking people.
Adults go through such impressive mental gymnastics when it comes to speed limits.
"What does the word limit mean?"
"I see what you're trying to do there but it's not that straightforward."
"Drive under the limit."
"Oh so you want me to go slow and cause a crash? Got it."
FFS, 24 mph is under a 25 mph limit. 44 mph is under a 45 mph limit. 64 mph is under a 65 mph limit.
People want to feel justified in breaking the law when their car is involved and it's bonkers to hear.
Slow down. You'll live longer and so will the people around you.
Since the start of congestion pricing we've heard from drivers who are frustrated with paying the toll, but some bus drivers and riders tell us they have seen a welcomed change. https://t.co/h88DyIb4mL
🌳 Paris is voting on turning more of its streets into green, people-friendly spaces—cooling cities, cleaning air, and fostering community.

@JawadPullin Wild that people think not building CC won't just rich people to move into surrounding neighborhoods and push out folks there.
What's the primary reason the surface parking lots in CC haven't been developed? Lack of land value tax and incentive to develop?
politicians have two choices to address traffic:
1) spend billions to widen highways, causing traffic to get even worse
2) create a congestion relief zone, raise billions of dollars, and use that money to fund improved public transit
Made this point in our post Macy's closure editorial. Absent major structural change in the city's economy, market street is not going to revert back to a regional shopping destination or attract significant new office construction.
People talk about how some folks are "entitled" wanting safer streets and areas only for buses and biking. Nobody talks about the entitlement of unnecessarily driving a large, private vehicle in a place not well-suited or built for large amounts of auto traffic.
If pedestrian safety keeps improving, there's going to be a push towards increasing the $9 toll to nudge even more people to use safer transportation options.
