@id24conf I'd love to hear from Lona what factored into her decision to share at work that she's on the spectrum. Why does she think it took her 10 years to do so?
@__grunet I thought about this some more @__grunet and I think professions that talk about transference likely try to cultivate some degree of self-awareness. This would include mental health professionals, bodywork professionals, and hopefully religious professionals.
Empathy requires humility. This is different from how, as designers, one often wants to jump in to solve the problem. That urgency can decrease empathy. It takes time.
@lydialeahhooper shares on learnings from nonviolent communication and how this relates to empathy #id24
@khallconsultant I think the focus on self can look like self-empathy and/or it can look like self-judgement. It would be interesting to see if you can start to tell the difference. I believe that tech doesn't necessarily create new social realities, and it definitely magnifies existing ones.
@khallconsultant That being said, I don't see why at least some empathy skills cannot be useful in online interactions. It's more challenging for sure, and I think it's still important. Hope this is a helpful response to your inquiry.
@khallconsultant I think the research on this might be mixed. Social media has been shown to increase connection & therefore empathy (Vossen & Valkenburg 2016 and Alloway et al 2014) & also to negatively impact it bc of decreased face-to-face (Ogan, Suheyd 2017).
“How might we?” invites the people in the room to consider how they might solve a problem.
But the more empathic thing to do, would be to ask “Who should we talk to?” or “Why are we doing this?”

Very exciting to have one of my articles published internationally! If you cannot read Italian, you can find an English version of "Ten Ways Cognitive Biases Impact Data Design Work" here: https://t.co/HmKpDKU8CX
We want to make decisions informed by data. But data can also be visualized poorly and ultimately misleading!

Adults are the ones not only in positions to support young people, but also w the power to affect change.” @lydialeahhooper
