When a husband submits to the Lord, leading his wife with a servant’s heart and nurturing her God-given talents, she can confidently submit to him — lean on him and trust his covering.

We have to remember that the full picture of marriage should reflect the love of Christ and His bride, the Church. It's modeled after the eternal fellowship and never-ending interpersonal give and take we experience with Christ as His bride.

Jesus gave up his life for his bride. This is what Paul has in mind when he says, "For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior” (Ephesians 5:23, ESV).

In a me-centered culture, which truly has no respect for the mystical and beautiful bond that is marriage, the concept of submission and respect is offensive, dangerous, and perverted. Yet, Scripture is clear about God's design for marriage in the fact that men and women have different roles. It never suggests one spouse is more valuable than the other. Our different needs are a reflection of Christ and the Church: Men need to feel respected by their wives, and women need to feel loved by their husbands. This is offensive to many.

That's why it is crucial for us to remember:
When the Bible says that wives should respect their husbands, it assumes such respect will be based on love. When it tells husbands to love their wives, it takes for granted that a disrespectful love isn’t love at all.
