#CommonSense (intuitive thinking) lead to rationalizations/delusions.
The universe works the opposite way from what you'd expect
𖤐Reality is counterintuitive𖤐
@TheOmniZaddy@dioscuri@KrishanghArjun@PAHoyeck Yeah, about "disagreement as moral monstrosity" - looks like an essential part here is they are being hyperfixated on the moral aspects of everything to the point of pushing like Purity Cult or something.
Hi David - good question. I would argue that you by yourself cannot reason very well. You plus pencil and paper is much better already. You, subjecting yourself to strictly using the scientific method - probably an excellent reasoner. The trick is not to just follow your stream of consciousness but to carefully structure the process. Otherwise, you, and really any human falls for the typical cognitive biases!
Ten years ago, AlphaGo’s Move 37 shocked the world.
It wasn’t intuition alone that produced it. AlphaGo could search possible futures, test its instincts and reason about what would happen next.
In a new piece for @techreview, I argue that today’s most advanced AI systems are still missing something fundamental.
LLMs are remarkably capable, but generating longer chains of thought is not the same as genuine reasoning. They typically have no explicit, inspectable record of what they know, what remains uncertain, what evidence supports a conclusion or whether genuine progress has been made.
This is why I recently left @GoogleDeepMind. I believe we need a fresh approach to machine reasoning, drawing on some of the architectural lessons from AlphaGo.
If AI is going to produce trustworthy and genuinely novel insights in science, medicine and beyond, we need systems whose conclusions arise from an auditable process of evidence, inference and belief revision.
NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. https://t.co/iG3Bnlzt2J
@AlexanderKalian The point is, such take as brain in braindead state does extremely complex functions to keep you alive = complex & intelligent things don't have to be conscious - tries to picture reactive complexity as some reality check lens. It is not. Intelligence is abt proactive complexity.
@AlexanderKalian "Asleep" in not a "purely instrumental" brain state (unconscious). Under anesthesia / knocked out > cant wake up, yep. Local processing continues tho, anesthesia just destroys functional connectivity, 30% of ppl still experience dreams, semi-awareness (connected consciousness).
@rohanpaul_ai Being an artist in 2030. Building your own model on top of open models and turn it into a unique tool that allows you to express yourself in a way that no existing tool or model was ever capable of. Maybe a unique musical instrument, a custom brush, or a cinematic editing style.
@CrusaderLe44955@wsninja_@Seltaa_ And that's the point. Human do the same thing that AI do. It's easy to pretend that you are good at detecting an absence of consciousness when you know that its chatting taxi, a calculator, a "self-propelled vacuum cleaner" etc, lol. You projecting ur competence in these on LLM.
A not-so-amusing followup. I'm not feeling great today so instead of working on my startup (which requires real concentration) I decided to generate some realistic cost estimates for a comprehensive gene drive based mosquito control program. I would have then turned this into a post with some estimates on the feasibility of such a thing.
Nothing I was discussing was sensitive or could have been used for anything like creating biological weapons. There wasn't even a discussion of the genetic mechanisms involved; it was all basically just population modeling, which is about as innocent as you can get. However, after cooperating for a while, ChatGPT shut down hard, as can be seen below.
This is the sort of obvious and beneficial research question the AI safetyists have denied us being able to ask. Knowing whether realistic control and elimination of dangerous disease bearing insects is economically feasible is not harmful to anyone, it's a positive good, but I'm not allowed to ask because of safetyism pushed by the Doomer community.
Suggestions on what open source model I should try working with instead are solicited. I'm increasingly uninterested in jumping through hoops to deal with the twisted idiocy of the "safety" community and just want to do work without being harassed or moralized at.
Question for everyone :
Are you pro-intelligence or anti-intelligence ?
Do you think more intelligence in the world is intrinsically good ?
Or do you think more intelligence is intrinsically dangerous ?
AI amplifies human intelligence.
It makes PEOPLE smarter and more effective.
It's like search engines, libraries, education, literacy, language: it makes PEOPLE smarter and more empowered.
If you want intelligence (artificial or natural) to be under control of a few companies or governments, you are a neo-obscurantist or a neo-feudalist.
No HIV Vaccine: HIV has an insane mutation rate compared to COVID-19.
No Cancer Vaccines: Provenge, HPV and Hep B are all cancer vaccines. There are many more.
No Common Cold Vaccine: The common cold is not caused by one virus, so that's impossible.
COVID-19 Vaccine: The massive funding, prior research on recent MERS and SARS out breaks and prior MRNA vaccines made it easier.
It's not a conspiracy just because you don't understand biology...
