Our demands of Lifespan:
· Forgive Medical Debt – Now and in the future!
· No Profiting Off Patients’ Debt – Protect medical debtors from collectors!
· Democratic Control of Lifespan Board of Directors – Patients and workers get due representation!
Kids are kicked off their parents’ health insurance at 26, but can be forced to take on their parents’ medical debt for the rest of their lives.
This is why insurance lobbyists shouldn’t be allowed to buy the politicians who write our healthcare laws.
Pass Medicare for All.
Our for-profit healthcare system is broken as it does not help nearly enough people receive the medical, dental, and vision care that they need.
We need #MedicareForAll because healthcare is a human right!
In other EMR news:
Is it surprising that "hospital executives are often more committed to Epic than most Americans are to their marriages?" Once bought in, hospital systems would have to pay a fortune to transfer to a different system. #EpicDisaster

For the fourth consecutive year, @DavidMoralesRI has introduced legislation to establish a statewide universal, comprehensive single-payer health care program.
“Every year, thousands of working people and families across Rhode Island refrain from receiving the medical and dental treatment that they need because it is just too expensive. In other words, if people feel forced to delay medical care because of the associated costs, it is a clear sign that we need to radically transform our health care system,” said Rep. Morales. “Through a single-payer Medicare-for-all health care system we would be able to guarantee comprehensive health care coverage to all Rhode Islanders free of out-of-pocket expenses or co-payments, regardless of socioeconomic status. Health care is a human right and we cannot afford to wait for the federal government to act.”
The bill is scheduled for a hearing by the House Finance Committee today, Wednesday, May 22, at Rise of the House (sometime after 5pm).

RI's own @DrMichaelFine explains what electronic medical records and the profit-motive have to do with that alienating feeling you get at the doctor:
"EMRs...have reduced me and my colleagues to billing clerks."

From the launch of our Lifespan debt forgiveness campaign. Catherine Ibern, a Rhode Island resident and organizer with the Poor People's Campaign, shares a moving personal testimonial about what Medicare doesn't cover. The solution: National Improved Medicare for All.
Congress's reluctance to put M4A and a ceasefire in Gaza on their agenda reveals who's really in charge. In both cases, people are suffering and demanding change. Until the demands are met, we'll keep fighting.

Providence residents have known Lifespan's do-nothing PILOT to be ridiculous. You know it's bad when even Mayor Smiley calls you out.
https://t.co/6Qe9QEtWx1
Lifespan definitely needs to start paying their fair of taxes to the city of Providence but it’s just hard for me to trust this Mayor’s word.
I hope the city council is included in these beginning negotiations between the Mayor and Lifespan. I hope we don’t see a repeat of-
"...Steward agreed to pay rent to keep its hospitals running. This year, Medical Properties Trust said the company owed tens of millions dollars in back rent. Both Warren and Markey said the leaseback deal was a major factor behind Steward's financial difficulties." #wealthcare
From Boston. There are layers upon layers of exploitation in American healthcare:
In 2016, Steward sold its hospital real estate in Massachusetts to a real estate investment firm, Medical Properties Trust, for $1.25 billion...

Where do you think RI ranks compared to every other state for medical debt consumer protection policies?

The latest Medicare attack from a Congressional Dem. How to stop these constant privatization schemes: National Improved Medicare for All.

Say no to Genocide Joe. Let's make the Dems scared. As we know with our healthcare system, the Dems won't make correct decisions on their own.
Show your support for an uncommitted vote. And please share.

An excellent summation of the issue (private healthcare) and the obvious solution (M4A). If the pervasive violence from denial of service or ridiculous billing isn't convincing enough, the author has startling statistics that should wake people up.

From earlier this month. The urgency for debt forgiveness and Medicare for All speaks for itself:
“As of Dec. 21, 2023, Aspen’s total cost of care is $1,056,789.” Audible gasps could be heard throughout the House chamber at the astronomical number.

We have news for everybody who thinks market forces will work themselves out in the long-run: evidence shows healthcare keeps getting bleaker.
We deserve universal healthcare now. Otherwise, finance and other forces will invent novel ways to exploit the most vulnerable.
Private Equity is taking over emergency rooms.
Doctors told us that when firms like Blackstone start buying up emergency care they have to care for more patients, and spend less time with those patients.
Then patients start seeing shockingly high bills.
