A Fields Medalist says AI can now understand mathematical proofs even when his notes are almost unreadable to other mathematicians.

John Pardon explains that until recently, AI was little more than a spelling checker for his mathematical writing.

Now, he says, it can examine highly compressed, incomplete research notes and identify subtle mathematical mistakes.

For example, a missing condition such as finite or sifted in a statement about colimits can change its meaning. According to Pardon, AI can recognize such omissions by interpreting the broader mathematical context.

His assessment is:

“The AI understands. 100%.”

Pardon also reports that AI has proved several nontrivial lemmas for him. However, he says it has not yet produced a major breakthrough in his own research.

Pardon believes AI is changing mathematical research, but he also emphasizes that students must work through easier problems themselves to develop the understanding needed for harder ones.

He finds value in deliberately approaching unfamiliar problems, even when AI could immediately explain the answers.

A horrific Russian strike in the Kharkiv region. A “shahed” struck people directly – in a park near an ordinary café. Pure atrocity. Six people were killed, including children. A little girl was killed in a stroller – her name was Angelina, she was just over a year old, born in August 2025… Her mother’s name was Inna. She died in the hospital… Another girl who was killed was 11 years old. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Another 14 people were injured, including six more children.

I am grateful to everyone who supports Ukraine under these circumstances and helps us shoot down “shaheds,” shoot down missiles, and stop Russian assaults. These are horrific photos, but behind them are shattered lives and the truth about this war. Lives must be protected. Ukraine needs air defense. You can't think about making money with Russia as long as it continues its asinine war. We ask that sanctions on Russia stay in place as long as the killings continue. We ask America to be strong, and we ask it to apply the Lindsey Graham law. We ask Europe to continue its support. We ask that everything possible be done to bring peace and guarantee security. Sur les convictions en matière de français, il est étonnant que près de la moitié des membres de son caucus ont fait le choix de faire leur premier geste solennel à l’assemblée nationale, soit leur serment au peuple québécois, en bilingue. Un geste qui n’est pas sans rappeler son affirmation a l’effet qu’il y a deux langues officielles au Québec, ce qui n’est bien sûr pas le cas.

J’espère donc que M. Milliard a la conviction que le français est la seule langue officielle au Québec et que nous pourrons compter sur sa collaboration à ce sujet.

Trump and his team argue that if Putin makes more money and feels better about the West, he is more likely to make a deal on Ukraine.

Now apply that logic to Iran. It means we should be easing sanctions, letting Iran sell energy, making them feel better about the West, and then they will make a deal with us about ending the war and quitting nukes. etc.

So why one appeasement strategy for Putin and another coercive strategy for Putin's allies in Iran? I dont get it.
