“I think that we haven’t really come to terms with the insidious nature of how we view Black women. And I’m sure people will read this and think, ‘Oh, for goodness’ sake, it’s not about that.’ But it is. Because that’s what was being made fun of. It was my physique; it was my shape; it was the fact that I was bald; it was about what I looked like. And because of that, there was this assumption that I was bigger than my co-star and so I had to be controlling or protecting, and that was my role. I would hazard a guess that it would not have been the same had it been the other way around.”

ROSALÍA reiterates that she believed "LUX" wouldn’t be an album made for the charts and says she cried when she saw the public’s reaction during its first week of release.

"I have to be one hundred percent honest with you. I thought LUX wouldn’t be an album aimed at the charts. I kept thinking: “If it happens, I hope so; it would be incredible, I really hope so.” It would be wonderful, a blessing. But I imagined it would be an album that might need some time to finally make sense, to “click.” And that wasn’t the case — I was wrong, and I was very surprised. I was really happy because I truly didn’t expect it at all.

I felt that I had made the record I genuinely wanted to make, no matter what. I went for it, took a leap of faith. And people enjoyed it, connected with it, and that made me very happy. I remember that during the first week after the release, I actually cried seeing people’s reactions… My phone kept showing videos of people crying while listening to the album. And that made me cry too, because if I see the fans crying, I cry as well. I don’t know… I really wasn’t expecting any of that."
