Hot take on METR’s new graph that so many people are flipping about today.

• Claude Code is a real advance; Mythos probably builds on some of what is learned there. But…

• If you read the graph carefully, it is about achieving *50%* success. Not 100 or 99 or even 90. The key problem with GenAI has been reliability; this graph does not address reliable performance. At all.

• If you read carefully, it is only about software tasks. Not general intelligence.

• It certainly doesn’t tell you that *most* (let alone) all things that humans can do in 16 hours can be done in Mythos, let alone reliably

• Aside from this, the graph doesn’t show you *how* the improvements have been made. As noted in my newsletter a lot of the advance in recent months is likely from the incorporation of symbolic tools (like code interpreters, verification, and harnesses) rather than from model scaling per se. As such this a vindication of neurosymbolic AI – but not a proof that LLMs themselves can be perpetually scaled. As such it’s not a proof that another trillion dollars will continue the graph.

Yes, the people who call themselves 'trans' exist and they deserve exactly the same rights as everyone else, which, fortunately, they already have in the UK. It would rightly be considered discrimination if a person was refused employment, housing or the vote because they identified as trans.

'Trans women are women' is a thought-terminating cliché. Men are not women. That doesn't mean they're not allowed to present themselves however they like, call themselves whatever they like and believe whatever they like about themselves. It means they haven't changed sex.

If we replace the objective, observable characteristic of sex with the unfalsifiable concept of gender identify, women and girls lose, among other things, their right to fair and safe sport and women-only spaces, including changing rooms, prison cells and rape crisis services.

Women and girls are provably more vulnerable to forms of abuse including sexual assault, harassment and voyeurism in mixed-sex spaces. There is no evidence that trans-identified men don't have exactly the same rates of criminal offending as all other men.

Trans people exist. I have no desire for them not to exist; indeed, I wish them safety, happiness and health. However, 'existence' does not, and should not, mean the violation of other people's right to privacy, dignity and freedom of speech, or the reconfiguration of society to indulge a fallacy.

When you admit men who claim to be women into spaces where women and girls are naked or otherwise vulnerable, the risk to girls and women increases. The evidence is clear and those still determined to deny it - you, @bphillipsonMP, every trans activist determined to push their unfalsifiable ideas about gender onto the whole of society - will rightly be judged by history as having enabled harm to women and girls in service of a dangerous, quasi-religious ideology.
