During the height of The Sopranos, Vinnie Pastore lived two blocks from me on City Island. Almost every day he’d be outside the same deli with a coffee, newspaper, and cigarette.
One of my friends walked up and asked, “Are you Big Pussy from The Sopranos?”
Vinnie lowered his paper, looked at him, and said, “You’re too young to be watching that show, kid.”
Then he went right back to reading the newspaper. 😂
More than 10 billion devices run on his idea.
He made $0 from every single one ~ and he planned it that way. 🤯
Meet Ajay Bhatt 🇮🇳🇺🇸
> Indian-American engineer. Born 1957 in Vadodara, Gujarat.
> Came to the US with a master's degree and joined Intel in 1990.
> One frustrating night, he couldn't connect a printer for his daughter's homework.
> He asked: why isn't there ONE universal port?
> His boss said it would never work. Told him to drop it.
> He didn't.
> Built it with fellow Intel engineer Bala Cadambi.
> Then united 7 fierce rivals ~ Intel, Microsoft, IBM, Compaq, DEC, NEC, Nortel ~ behind one shared standard.
> Apple fought it with FireWire. USB was cheaper. USB won.
> USB 1.0 launched in 1996. He went on to build USB 2.0 and 3.0.
> Intel made it royalty-free ~ free for the entire planet. 🚀
> Bhatt earned not a dime in personal royalties. By choice.
> 2009: Intel made him a "rock star" in a viral ad ~ played by a hired actor, not him.
> 2025: India finally honored him with the Padma Shri.
The man who connected the world.
And asked for nothing in return.
Absolute Legend 🐐
Shōgun was a loud reminder that even in this day and age, excellence can still be achieved. Hiroyuki Sanada has done nothing but make great projects in Hollywood for decades. He’s as consistent & reliable as they come. This show was his chance to take center stage. Prestige TV.
Here's the Afghan Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan, brother of Nusrat, speaking in Dari.
It's also worth noting that the style of Qawwali Nusrat is famous for is referred to as Doaba Angg - it's a distinctly East Punjabi style that migrated to Pakistan entirely and therefore is inherently Pakistani.
Afghans/Indians claiming uniquely Pakistani history/culture just shows lack of appreciation and an inferiority complex. Part of appreciating something is giving the culture that gave rise to it - it's fair due.
Before your operating system loads. Before Windows or macOS gets involved. Before any app, any driver, any software you’ve ever installed gets a single moment of attention, something else wakes up first.
Most people have never seen it. Almost nobody thinks about it. But without it, your computer is just an expensive paperweight.
It’s called the BIOS. Basic Input Output System. And it is the oldest piece of software still running on modern computers.
The moment you press the power button, the CPU has no idea what to do. It has no operating system to consult, no memory loaded, no instructions in front of it. So it does the one thing it’s hardwired to do; it looks at a specific memory address on a chip on your motherboard. That chip holds the BIOS. And the BIOS immediately takes charge.
The first thing it runs is called “POST” Power On Self Test. It checks whether the CPU is functioning, whether RAM is present and readable, whether storage devices are connected, whether the keyboard and display are responding. It’s a checklist your computer runs on itself every single time it powers on, in the fraction of a second before anything appears on your screen. If something fails, the BIOS doesn’t guess rather it halts and throws an error, sometimes a beep code, before the operating system ever gets involved.
Once POST passes, the BIOS hands off control. It looks for a bootable device ; your SSD, your hard drive, a USB stick reads the first sector of that device, finds the bootloader, and passes execution to it. From that moment, the operating system takes over and the BIOS steps back.
For decades, BIOS was the standard. Then in 2010, it started being replaced by something called “UEFI” Unified Extensible Firmware Interface. Same job, dramatically more capable. UEFI supports larger drives, boots significantly faster, has a graphical interface you can navigate with a mouse, and includes Secure Boot; a feature that checks whether the bootloader has been tampered with before allowing it to run, blocking certain classes of malware that try to hide below the operating system level.
Most modern computers run UEFI. But the name BIOS stuck. People still call it the BIOS, still press Delete or F2 to open it, still use it to change boot order, check temperatures, enable virtualization, and configure hardware even if what they’re actually looking at is a UEFI interface dressed in familiar clothing.
Lenovo has replaced the right control key on their otherwise-pretty-nice latest X1 Carbon (warranty replacement) with a copilot key. Fine. I won't begrudge some Microsoft PM "AI impact" in his self-review. But know what I do begrudge? The scancodes, plural.
See, the copilot key is defined to emit not only a new scancode (0x6e), understood as F23 key (which archeologists believed wasn't a real key, but a legendary signifier of excess), but also left shift and left meta (Windows key). When you type the copilot key, the PC firmware sends the machine left-shift-down left-meta-down f23-down f23-up left-meta-up left-shift-up.
That's a problem for remapping the copilot key back to right-control though. Even if we interpret 0x6e as right-control, we get a bunch of other modifiers we don't need along with, a press of copilot-r gets read as control-meta-shift-r, which is not what I want.
Why did they do this? I have no idea. 0x6e by itself would have sufficed to identify the new key. All the other neokeys that seemed like good ideas at the time got normal scancodes. F23 would have been fine. The scancode 0x6e is so uncommon Linux had to be patched to recognize it.
I'm determined to have a right control key, however, so now I run keyd to present a fake virtual keyboard to Wayland. Whenever it sees a left-shift-down or left-meta-down, it waits a few milliseconds to see whether an F23 has arrived. If it has, it synthesizes a right-control press. If it hasn't, it forwards the modifier presses.
Now there's a whole new stage in the input processing pipeline, and extra input latency, that exists solely because AI is so special that it demands not only a new key, but for that ceremonial key to be carried on a litter of modifier bits as it parades into the OS and commands that inference happen now.
Robert De Niro only agreed to star in Heat after reading the legendary diner scene.
He, Al Pacino, and director Michael Mann all admitted they were counting the days until they could film it.
De Niro refused any rehearsals for the sequence, wanting the raw tension between the two characters to feel absolutely authentic and unrehearsed.
Daniel Day-Lewis stands alone in cinema history. He is the only male actor to ever win three Best Actor Oscars for leading roles: My Left Foot (1989), There Will Be Blood (2007), and Lincoln (2012).
China Eastern’s inaugural flight from Shanghai to Buenos Aires via Auckland is en route. At nearly 20,000km it is the longest route in the world. Track #CES745 here: https://t.co/iSqnWqGHEY
Diane Keaton went toe-to-toe with Al Pacino in The Godfather Part II & gave a performance that absolutely elevated this film. Kay’s quietly-held fears of her own husband finally explode to the surface here. This is an unforgettable scene from two unforgettable actors. RIP Diane.
RIP Diane Keaton
The Godfather (1972)
The final shot of one of the greatest movies ever made belongs to Diane. Her career spanned decades, demonstrating both comedic brilliance and powerful dramatic range. There was a charm to Diane that can never be taught or replicated.
Why is P&G — one of the world’s most successful consumer giants — exiting a 250 million–strong market?
Pakistan is a consumption-driven economy — yet even that advantage is no longer enough to retain global giants like Procter & Gamble.
The reason behind P&G’s exit is both global and local.
Globally, the company is pruning low-margin operations as part of a strategic restructuring.
But locally, Pakistan’s high cost pressures, steep tax rates, repatriation hurdles, and eroding consumer purchasing power have made operations unsustainable.
Having worked with P&G as its external auditor for over 16 years as Managing Partner for Deloitte Pakistan until 2018, I know this isn’t a company that gives up easily. In fact, P&G was perhaps Deloitte’s oldest global client, as the engagement letter that was shown to me in one of Deloitte’s global audit meetings was dated around 1890.
Even through past downturns, their brand strength and scale allowed them to remain profitable in Pakistan.
But the current environment has become too hostile for manufacturers. Sustaining reasonable after-tax margins is now a struggle even for top-tier companies.
This exit should not just concern policymakers — it should alarm them.
When a company like P&G — built on brand, discipline, and consumer insight — decides to walk away from one of the world’s largest consumer markets, it says something profound about the state of our business environment.
It’s time to fix what’s broken — from tax policy and regulatory instability to investor confidence and currency management — before more exits follow.
