A firm response from @BDMOFA. If the Indian government @MEAIndia is genuinely interested in improving bilateral relations, sheltering the deposed head of a corrupt regime is precisely the wrong way to demonstrate it. New Delhi must act sensibly and extradite this fugitive to Bangladesh without delay.
A formal, independent psychiatric evaluation of Sheikh Hasina would not be an unreasonable proposition. The findings presented in the United Nations' investigative report raise profoundly troubling questions about the decision-making behind the reported use of lethal force against civilians, including children, within an exceptionally short period of time. Such allegations inevitably invite serious scrutiny of the judgment and mental fitness of those who exercised command responsibility.
Equally concerning is the decision to provide a state-backed platform to a fugitive political figure facing grave allegations of human rights violations. This goes far beyond the question of offering refuge; it creates the perception of facilitating political activities directed against Bangladesh and risks undermining accountability, justice, and regional stability.
If India genuinely seeks a mature, stable, and forward-looking partnership with Bangladesh, it should refrain from providing political legitimacy or a public platform to individuals against whom the United Nations has documented serious allegations of human rights abuses. Doing otherwise raises legitimate concerns regarding respect for Bangladesh's sovereignty, national security, and the democratic aspirations of its people.
Bangladesh seeks neither hostility nor confrontation with India. We seek a bilateral relationship founded on mutual respect, sovereign equality, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, and respect for the democratic will of the people. Such a relationship, however, requires acknowledging the political reality that emerged from the July Uprising and avoiding any action that could be perceived as enabling the political rehabilitation of those facing credible allegations of grave human rights violations.
No durable regional partnership can be built by disregarding accountability or by appearing to shield individuals accused of serious abuses. Justice, respect for sovereignty, and adherence to international norms remain the only sustainable foundations for long-term peace and constructive bilateral relations.
